Bulletproof Guide to Sony Camera Firmware Updates

Sony camera firmware updates can be confusing if you have not done them before, but following these steps will make the process bulletproof. Please read these carefully before you start! If you missed previous updates – you can skip straight to the newest firmware since it includes all the previous updates.

Ten Tips for Sony Camera Firmware Updates

1. Firmware updates are designed for one specific camera. Do not install this utility with any other model. Only update using a supported Operating System!

2. Digital Camera firmware updates and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. The update cannot be reversed.

3. Do not allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change your settings, please refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.

4. Use a fully charged battery when performing firmware updates. The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.

5. Close ALL other programs and apps. Disable all pop-ups and security software while running updates. You can turn it back on once you’re finished.

6. Use the USB cable that came with your camera or a compatible tethering cable. Generic mini-USB cords may appear to be compatible but many are missing one connection needed to perform updates.

7. Remove all external drives and devices. Connect the cord directly into your computer’s USB port – not through a USB hub.

8. Before connecting your camera, remove the SD card. This will prevent programs like Capture One and Lightroom from opening an import window if they detect a memory card when the camera restarts during the update.

9. If you’re using a vertical grip on your camera, remove it and place the battery directly in the camera for the duration of the update.

10. You must be logged in with Admin privileges in order to run an update.

Updates generally take 15 minutes to complete. During that time you camera may appear unresponsive. Your camera is NOT “Bricked” – it’s updating
DO NOT TOUCH IT UNTIL IT’S FINISHED. Just walk away….Really!

You may wish to print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

MAC USERS PLEASE NOTE:

The latest Sony Firmware Updates are only compatible with MacOS 10.15, 11, 12. Sony updates are compatible with the MacOS at the time of release and are not updated for later MacOS – so please be certain all your camera and lens firmware is up-to-date before even considering a full version MacOS update.

System Requirements

The latest version of the system software update is compatible with the following Macintosh versions:
MacOS 10.15, 11, 12

Computer Hardware

The latest version of the system software update is compatible with the following hardware:

  2. Hi Brian,
Thanks for this, its really useful info. If you don’t mind though, would you mind letting me know what OS you’re using please? I ask because since Mavericks, I haven’t been able to perform a firmware update on any of my Macs, the same was true with Yosemite and now with El Capitan.

I have an old Lenovo Windows laptop that I’m using at the moment but as the Mac is my main computer I’d like to do it there. From the looks of your screenshots, you’re using a Mac too, so I’m hoping that would mean its not an OS issue, just a bug somewhere that I need to find and iron out.

To be honest Im having the similar issues with the playmemories site, it doesn’t recognise that the camera is connected, regardless of whether I use Chrome / Safari, MASS Storage or MLB (or whatever its called). So there may be a connection there.

    Thanks again,

    Andrew

      1. And therein lies a problem. macOS Sierra 10.12 is not supported and Sony don’t seem to be interested in sorting it. So if you buy a new MAC, don’t buy a Sony camera!

      2. I am on iMac beta user macOS big sur Version 11.3 beta and its not working is there any other way to get this software for my SONT a9II camera

  8. Sigh! I can see from your screen shots, the firmware update seems to work fine on your system, but so far, I’ve been unsuccessful updating my Sony A7S II on my Macintosh (OS X 10.11.2) my laptop still on Yosemite, and my friend’s PC running Vista home edition premium. Same story on all: the camera mounts fine when connected to the USB cable, but the software doesn’t recognize it is connected. I’ve done all of the troubleshooting, dismounting all external devices, shutting all programs, trying different USB ports, etc. no luck.

        1. Then you are missing a step. I’ve done hundreds of updates now and as long as you have the correct firmware for your camera model and follow these steps, they work every time.

  9. Sorry, no missing steps. I even went to the trouble of trying one of the older firmware upgrades for the ILCE7M2 and it correctly identified the camera and reported that the camera was already at the 1.1 firmware level. For some reason, firmware version 2 of upgrade software doesn’t work. Also I noted that when I loaded the version 1.1 firmware, the screen on the camera went dark. When I run the version 2 update, the screen displays “USB Mode MASS Storage -USB-” And just to be sure, I’ve tried this on three computers and with another micro USB cable.

    1. Yes, the camera LCD screen will go dark for 15 minutes while the camera updates. Try downloading the firmware again. Be certain it’s the ILCE-7M2. Firmware for other cameras will not install.

  10. I’ve downloaded the update on three computers more than once, and yes it is for the A7S II. The software fails right at the beginning of the process because it cannot locate the camera and times out. It asks that I disconnect the camera, remove the battery and try again. (Done that) I think I’m up to a dozen attempts so far…

  11. Hmm, My ILCE-7M2 is visible as a mass storage, (when the card is in, I can view the clips) but system Softwear Updater can’t connect to the body.I ve studied every warnings several times. I’ve tried on a different PC also, but nothing.. sorry for my english.

  12. After connecting body via usb cable, I can see USB Mode Mass Storage, but also ” Playback” There is no card in the body, but some folders opens on the PC names PMHOME (H) is it correct ? Thank you for your answer !

    1. Are you pressing the playback button? Don’t.

Be certain all other programs and applications are shot down and nothing but the camera is plugged into the computer. The camera must be connected with a Sony USB cord and plugged directly into the computer not through a hub. Launch the application before turning on the camera.

These steps are all in the directions.

  13. Thank You, but I’ve made everything like is listed in your steps.. No I am not pressing playback button. When I reconect usb cabe the body become automataticly in playback mode.

    1. Never had that happen so I’m not sure. You might be able to start over. That is why I recommend shutting down all other programs and apps while running firmware updates

  15. Thanks, Brian, for your response! Actually, I just had to remove the battery & unplug the camera for about 15min or so before trying again. The firmware update program recognized the camera & I completed the update fully second time around.

Sir, my A7 II together with iMac, latest software would not allow firmware update without a memory card in place!
    Regards,
    Jorgen Aage Jensen

    1. Interesting. I’m still running 10.9.5 and I always remove the memory cards. I only suggest doing that because lots of people forget to disable auto-import pop-ups like Capture One.

  20. Hi, Have tried to update my a7s2 with both a Mac and a PC but in both cases I get as far as step 7 and then the Mac/PC can’t find the a7s2

Any help would be really appreciated

    1. That always comes down to one of two errors. Either:

      1) The USB Cord is not the one that came with the camera. (It looks like a universal cord – but it’s not)
      2) You’re running an update for the wrong camera. Firmware updates are camera specific and the updater protects you from loading firmware for a different camera.

  21. The cord was just taken from the box and appears to work, it will allow me to access the SD card and charge.

Update_ILCE7M2V310.dmg This is the file I’m attempting to update my Sony A7Sii currently version 2.0

    1. Just as I suspected you’re attempting to run a firmware for a7II on an a7SII.

The updater is protecting your ass. Thank Sony. Then download the correct firmware.

  22. Haha, thank god you’re here! Any chance you have a link to the correct firmware so i don’t get it wrong again.

  23. I have never updated my Sony A6000. Do I have to install previous updates before installing the current one? There is a 1.20 that has not been done on my Sony. Should I install it first or is this newest update all inclusive?

  26. Forgive me if this is an old subject, but I didn’t find mention. I have a new to me NOS 2011 Sony A33 and downloaded the appropriate update. The update is 32 bit in form and my Mac’s are 64 bit El Capitan only. Cannot do the 3-2 finger start, nor are there any options to force Sony Firmware to boot to 32 bit. It just seems to be Not Compatible. Any ideas?

    1. First off, check the camera to make certain it’s not already running firmware 2.00. You can find that in the menu under “Version”

If not, you have two options.

      1. Find a friend with Mac OS 10.7 or older and use their Mac to run you update.
      2. Don’t worry about it and just go shoot photos.

  28. Sorry, another one Brian! It’s really hit and miss on this update business. I’ve managed to make it work a couple of times with my A7Rll on my Mac but not at all now on my new a63000. The screen does not go black when the cameras connected? I’ve tried both leads and all USB sockets. Why can’t we upgrade by downloading the file to the SD like other cameras? Less variables in the process i.e. dodgy leads, dodgy sockets etc???

    1. The latest a6300 fw update ran fine for me on Mac with El Capitan. Make certain all the settings are correct and the USB cord is the one that came with the camera.

  31. Can someone Help me? I tried to update my Sony alpha 5000 to 1.10 . Sadly, the update failed. It said i should disconnect my camera and take the battery out. I did so. After that i put the battery back. A red light turned on. I waited long. After a couple of minutes (or hours) the light turned off. I tried to turn on the camera. But it didn’t turn on. I tried to charge the camera. Even the charging light didn’t turn on. PLEASE HELP ME 🙁

    1. It’s very important to follow these directions to the letter. Don’t disconnect while an upgrade is in progress. They take at least 15 minutes during which time the camera in unresponsive as it upgrades.

  32. This was extremely helpful! I had the wrong cable…but didn’t believe it. Had to turn the house upsidedown to find the right one.

  34. Hi Brian,. in your Step 7 you state “remove all external drives and devices” Understand the external drives OK, but do you also mean as other devices -Printers and Scanners?

  35. Dear Brian

    Firstly: thanks for your info!

I have a question regarding my Sony A7S2… I suspect a firmware glitch.. perhaps you are familiair with it, so please bare with me:

With my A7S2 I sometimes experience some kind of firmware glitch, I suspect
Actually have been experiencing it since the moment I got it from the store in April but due to deadlines and projects I wasn’t able to check on it before today…

After shooting (video) I always tend to check the result by hitting the play button… After checking I just want to go back straigh to shooting the clip
And here lies the problem: after coming back from the reply menu my image is either blown up in over exposing and sometimes under exposed!

This happens without any changes in lighting on the set or in camera: Shutter, ISO, Aperture and ND filter are untouched. At first I thought it was just me accidentally changing my shutter etc.

But then it sometimes also happens when coming out of standby or just turning the cam on…

Only way I can help it is by either adjusting my settings (but kind of difficult when you already are on F22, ISO 800 and Shutter 50 and your shot is over exposed) or by turning it off and on which doesn’t always work unless getting my battery out and inserting it again.

    Anybody familiar with this problem?
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Okayyyy, not exactly a camera firmware update question, but here goes…If you’re at F22 with 1/50 sec there’s no room to stop down. Is there a reason you need to be at ISO 800? Auto ISO or a variable ND might be the way to go to keep exposure from blowing out.

  36. I am hoping you might can help me. I just did the 3.20 update on my a7ii. Previously when I was shooting in Auto HDR, it would fire the flashes every time it took a frame. I use this very often and have been for about a year in doing real estate photography. Since the upate, the flash will not fire but once when the shutter is pressed. Before, I stayed connected through Smart Remote and fire from my ipad. Now it doesn’t matter if I try to fire in the app or not, it does the same thing- it will shoot the frames but only fire the flashes once. I even spoke with Sony rep last night who got me to reset the camera and still, it won’t work. Please let me know if you have heard of such an issue and know how to fix it or if somehow it could have messed up my camera. Thank you in advance.

    1. I’ve never used Auto HDR with flash since the strobes I use won’t recycle that quickly. As long as you’ve reported the issue to Sony, you’ve already done what I would have suggested.

  37. Hi Brian,

Thanks for maintaining such a helpful site. I’ve hit a snag that probably is beyond your grasp, but I thought you might know if anything is in the works to solve it.

I need to update my A7 software, but when I try I get this message:

You can’t use this version of the application “FirmwareUpdater” with this version of macOS.

    I’m running 10.12.1 on a 15-inch macbook pro.

I presume this is a case of Sony software that needs to be updated, but thought I’d run it by you just in case there’s a work around.

    Many thanks

    1. The only camera firmware updates I’ve found to be compatible with OS 10.12 are the most recent firmware updates for a7II, a7RII, a7SII. Everything else was written before the release of Mac 10.12, so I’d imagine future firmware updates with be 10.12 compatible. I always, always recommend updating all cameras and apps BEFORE updating your Mac OS.

  38. Hi Brian,

Thanks for maintaining such rich and informative site.

I’ve hit a snag that is probably beyond your grasp, but thought I’d ask. I need to update my A7 firmware, but when I try I get this message:

You can’t use this version of the application “FirmwareUpdater” with this version of macOS.

    I’m running a 15-inch macbook pro with 10.12.1 (sierra).

I presume this is a case of Sony software in need of a compatibility update, but thought there might be an outside chance of a work around or that you might possibly know when an update would be forthcoming. Thanks for the help!

  39. I just discovered that my son’s iMac is still on Yosemite, so that should solve the issue. Thanks again for your site.

  52. Just updated my firmware on my a6500. Tried to update using my fairly new i7 PC and it kept failing when trying to reset the camera. Tried USB 2 and 3 ports, Exit all programs, etc. nothing worked. Had to remove the battery to restart. Thought something was wrong with my camera. Tried on my old Microsoft Surface Pro and updated fine. So I don’t know why it wouldn’t update using my PC???

    1. It’s got nothing to do with USB 2 vs USB 3 – both are compatible. It’s always one of the things on this list.

  53. Cynthia Fleury

I want to do a firmware update on my Sony A7RIII. I have a newer Macbook Pro that has only usb C ports and is running on MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6. I also have a really old Windows laptop. Should I use the old laptap for my update? Also, I have many cables since I own 4 Sony cameras. Has the cable changed? I have one that fits into the camera in the second to the bottom hole. Is this the right one?

    1. Use the USB-C port for a7R III firmware updates. Your camera came with a USB-C cable. Your Mac’s USB-C to USB-C charging cable will also work fine.

  54. Worked perfectly for my a6500. Thanks for the detailed – and reassuring – step by step instructions! Your site is a wonderful resource. Thanks very much.

    1. Great to hear! Now that you’ve done it once it’s fairly straight-forward to follow the steps.

  55. I have a Sony A7 and have never done a firmware update. I’m running a Mac with High Sierra 10.13.6, can I just update with the most recent firmware update or do I have to start with the first update?

    1. As I mention in the first paragraph “If you missed several updates – you can skip straight to the newest firmware since it includes all the previous updates.”

  56. For a step by step process, still a bit confusing. Jumps around – Page 2, Item 3, connect camera when you see message. Page 3, Item 2 under download/update firmware, do not connect camera yet. Then same page, Item 6, connect camera.

  57. Thanks man. I’d never think I have to open “Resources” folder when there is an app in the root folder. It’s soooo user-friendly.

  58. Just tried updating a7s firmware, finished the process but pulled the usb cable out after waiting for a few minutes after clicking ‘finish’. Now camera won’t turn on with red led on. What can I do? Running mac os x 10.9.5 updating to the latest sony firmware for the a7s. Thanks in advance!

    1. Remove the battery for 30 seconds while holding shutter release button. Reinsert the battery and see if that clears up the red light.

  59. Just finished updating both the a7Riii and a7iii with no issues.

I have been trying to update the a6500 to 1.06 from 1.05 and can’t get it to work.

I’m past the security issue, and get the dialog box stating to connect the camera to the computer.

Once I click ‘next’ to start the update, it won’t happen. Eventually it times out and give instruction on how to restart the update process.

Have you seen this before? Not my first Rodeo with Sony and MacOS. Always follow the bullet proof spec’s and it works. Like I said, just updated both a7Riii and a7iii, no issues.

    MacOS 10.15.2

  60. Brian,

So what’s a viable method to update the a6500 to FW 1.06. I’m already on MacOS 10.15.2. Do I have to wait for Sony to update the updater?

Maybe I should just use a windows machine? Can’t believe I just typed that.

Will the older DriverLoader tool work on Catalina?

I also want to update the FW on my 100400GM to FW2. Since both my 7Riii and 7iii updated (with out issue) I guess the FW update for the lens should work, maybe?

    Thanks for your opinion.

    Steve

    1. Hi Steve, a6500 firmware 1.06 was released May 16, 2019 – long before Catalina.
It’s REALLY important to update all your Sony cameras and lenses BEFORE even considering a MAC OS Update.
You need to find a Mac running 10.12-10.14 or Windows PC if you want to run this update.

      1. Thanks for confirming my fear.

A friend has an old MacMini running Sierra, so I’ll be using that machine to update the lens and a6500.

As always, your site is a treasure trove of information. Thanks for keeping it up.

  61. Mac Catalina 10.15.3 users BEWARE!! I just bricked an A7RII ILCE-7RM2 trying to update from 4.0 to 4.01 using my MacBook Pro Catalina 10.15.3 VERY CAREFULLY following Sony’s instructions. I had updated this camera with this computer but an earlier OS successfully in the past. About 1/3 way done, the camera just disconnected from the computer (volume disappeared from desktop), the little red light would not go out, and the camera would not reconnect. I tried pulling the battery. I read where some folks had to run the update more than once, but I couldn’t run it again on the Mac because the Mac would not mount the camera as a mass storage volume. The reason I am not really upset is my wife has a desktop PC, and even in this messed up state, the camera responded to the Windows updater and is back running.

    1. It isn’t actually possible to “Brick” a Sony camera during update. Remove the battery for at least one minute. Re-insert and start over. Make certain Mac Power Savings is turned off so the computer won’t go to sleep.

      1. Oh, I tried that. I left the battery out for about 30 minutes while searching on the web for solutions. The A7RII never changed state – when I reinserted the battery, the red activity LED bottom right back came on whether the power switch was on or off. In that state, when plugged into either of the two Macbook Pro USB ports, the computer never mounted the A7RII as a volume, and the Sony software kept saying to plug in the camera even though it already was.

  62. Hi there, I’m having a Sony A9ii and wish to upgrade to version 1.0.1 on a Mac running 10.15.3 but cant get the connection to work. I got Imaging Edge Remote SW working which makes me believe that USB connection is working. I’m not very good at this computer things so any help would be really great. Thanks heaps.

    1. Apple seems to be doing everything they can to block firmware updates – and they’re doing a great job of it!

The latest firmware updates were compatible with earlier versions of OS 10.15 but I’m net sure about 10.15.3.

Just be certain you follow ALL the suggestions in this post. That’s the best I can offer.

      1. As Mr. Smith knows, the update for my A7RII didn’t work for me on MacOS 10.15.3, and I sure thought I followed the directions very carefully. On the other hand, using my wife’s Windows 10 PC worked SO easily and well, I’d urge Holger to try to find a PC to use. BTW, thanks again for this resource.

        1. I went to a friends house who has a MacMini running 10.12. Likewise, fast and easy.

          A PC is easier though.

        2. John, I’m curious to know, did you try the option of holding down the shutter for 30sec with no battery?

        3. Hi Brian, thnx for your reply. I think it was a case of PICNIC (problem in chair not in computer). I set-up wifi, turn it off , played around with settings and suddenly, it all worked. I cant remember exactly, but I think it worked after I turned PC remote off, but not sure. It than showed USB and mass storage and went through the entire process and I now have 1.0.1. So indirectly I can confirm that it works on Mac 10.15.3 :-).

  63. Nothing was working for me on my RX100 V until I restarted my Mac (10.14). Previously I was getting the cannot locate the camera message. So if you are having trouble, try restarting your computer after installing the DriverLoader

    1. I’ve never had to restart my Mac in order to run a firmware update – but I’m glad that did the trick for you.

  64. HI Brian

I have tried everything to update my A7iii firmware to 3.10 via iMac.. but to no avail, I’m fed with trying. its ridiculous. I have tried all your steps meticulously. still no joy. It should not be this difficult. I have updated previously when I first purchased my Sony cameras with no issues.

    1. I’ve used theses exact steps to update many cameras. Miss any one of them and it won’t work. Pay particular attention to the explanation of running SystemSoftwareUpdater BEFORE attempting to run the firmware update. That may be new since the last time you ran an update. And make sure you’re using a USB-C cord – not USB micro.

    2. Jon, I feel your pain.

You are correct; it should not be this difficult, but it is if you use MacOS with >10.14.

I have been successful doing FW updates on my MAC following these instructions, but all before Catalina. If your OS is prior to Catalina you have to do every step in it’s order. OR, if you can, just find a Windows computer or a Mac with older OS. Which is what I did.

I now have a 2012 MacMini with 10.12 sitting on the floor, waiting for the next Sony FW to arrive.

      Good luck, don’t give up.

      Steve

Current MacOS 10.15.4 and it does not work for FW updates.

      1. “Current MacOS 10.15.4 and it does not work for FW updates.”

That was also my experience with 10.15.3. The workaround was to use my wife’s Windows PC.

It’s annoying, but if you are having this problem with recent MacOS’s, find a friend with a PC to use.

    1. Every Sony firmware update released since Catina is 100% compatible. Just follow the instructions on the bottom of this post.

  65. I am attempting to update the firmware for my a6000 and it says I need a driver loader 1015 to use the update. The driver loader downloads but does not install.

  66. This is strange. I have thousand of dollars in Sony cameras and have always battled with Sony software. I bought this RX10m3 a couple of months ago have spent hours trying to update the firmware to 2. I have a little China build cam here, that in two minutes upload software, that will pan, zoom, and god knows what. I am wondering if folk at Sony software illiterate?

I have tired in every way I can think of just to load the DriverLoader 1013,app to my machine, because I am running OS 10.13.6 . Apple security will not let me load it. I never get the ‘allow’ in the security window to get passed the first step in the process.

My Iphone loads ImagingEdge and it connects into the rx10 with firmware 1, but the only thing that shows up is media select, no camera controls at all. I have a FDR-AX53 and ImagingEdge works great with that. So I know ImagingEdge can control a camera. But it pisses me off that I payed almost 2 grand for this RX and Sony can’t find a way to make this Camera work easily for mac users.

I can’t seem to get pass the first step to start the bullet proof procedures you have listed above. Wz

  67. I would like to add a note to my comment on Sony driver loader. I have two DJI drones, a mavic mini and mavic pro 2, china again. Up loading firmware on them is beyond easy. I have upgraded firmware on both machines, it as as easy as toasting toast in a toaster. Why can’t Sony do the same? It makes no sense to me. Wz

    1. There’s a big difference in the amount of data. Sony lens firmware updates take 15 seconds. Cameras take 15 minutes. When you get to the 15 minute level it’s the same as updating an iPhone.

    1. I do not expect any firmware updates for a7R II unless one is required for lens or accessory compatibility.

  68. Hi Brian, I am having major issues trying to update the firmware on my Sony HXR-NX80 camcorder. I have followed your guidance about running the Update Setting Tool but I keep getting as far as the first step where it waits/circles then gives me a “Could not update” message. I wondered if it is a Big Sur issue perhaps? Any suggestions?

    1. If you didn’t follow my advice, you’ll need to find a friend who either running MacOS 10.13-10.15 or Windows in order to run that firmware update.

      1. Thanks for the rapid response Brian, much appreciated. I downloaded a trial version of Parallels, ran the update again, and success! I only bought the camcorder last week, I use Nikon bodies for my photography and have never had issues with them or my Atomos. I am now fore-warned!

  69. Hi Brian,
    really appreciate your posts.
I’ve got a similar problem as another user in this thread: while updating my ILCE-7 (on Mac) to newest firmware, the Mac update app crashed, and I pulled the cable – which left me with camera non-responsive and red light on, no matter what I do. I tried
    – taking out the batter for 30sec and much longer
    – holding the shutter button while the batter is out for 30 secs and longer

Could you advise what could solve the problem please? Is there any factory reset?

    Thanks!
    Egor

    1. 1) Make sure your battery is 100% fully charged
      2) Try to reinstall the firmware update (it’s possible to install firmware on top of a failed update though your screen will likely be black during the process.)
      3) If this doesn’t work on a MAC (and it won’t work on Big Sur) try a PC.

  70. Personally, I would skip the Mac all together. Try to reinstall the update on a PC. Much less complicated and you’ll (IN MY OPINION) have a better chance of success.

Good luck, and please respond back with your results.

  71. Does the a6600 have the CPU power to perform that task?

I have not looked up the spec’s of the a6600 vs the a9 or other Alpha units.

  72. For firmware update of sony a7III on mac catalina 10.15.3

after downloading firmware updater I type in computer password and get a message saying You need to install Sony Camera Driver. How do I do this?

  73. Hi Brian,

Thanks for your guide, but FYI: The official Sony ICLE-7M3 V 4 Mac Firmware update page now specifically lists macOS 11 as being compatible. That said, I am running OS X 11.2.3 and could not update my a7iii to v4.0. Tried multiple times with many different USB cables. Followed your hints to the letter. It simply would not work with my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019). I even bought new USB cables – my OEM Sony cables are USB A to USB C or Micro, requiring a USB A to C/Micro adapter, which could conceivably cause a problem. In the end it was Parallels Desktop that saved the day. I have it running OS X Mojave – the last 32 bit OS for running Photoshop etc. Yup, I’m one of the old guard who won’t go the Adobe subscription route. In any case, I fired up Parallels and Mojave, installed the Camera Driver and tried the update. Bingo! Worked like a charm. Didn’t have to eject any external USB stuff either. No cable issues. Worked on the first try: So much for Sony’s OS X so called 11 compatibility!

  74. Hi Brian. I’m having trouble updating the firmware on my Sony HXR-NX80 from Version 1.00 to 2.00. Your website does have a comment from another NX80 owner with a similar issue (Phil Swallow on 1/20/21) – but he’s got a Mac and I’m using a PC with Windows 10 Pro. I downloaded the update from the pro.sony website, extracted the files and double-clicked on the Application. The “System Software Updater” opens with instructions to “(1) turn on the camera; (2) connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable; and (3) click the [Next] button when the connection has been made.” Having already connected the AC power adapter and removed the SD cards, I then plugged a USB cable into the camera’s “multi-micro USB jack” and directly into a USB port on the back of my desktop PC (iBUYPOWER Intel Core i7 gaming desktop). After clicking the [Next] button, the Software Updater says “Verifying the connection …” and about 10 seconds later it says “Could not find the camera for this update.” However, the connection between the camera and the computer appears to be successful because as soon as the USB cable is plugged in, the video camera screen displays, “USB CONNECT. Mass Storage Preparing … USB.” Any suggestions? Also, can the NX80 be used as a webcam?

    1. Hello Bain, I’m not certain how Sony Camcorder firmware updates differ from Sony Alpha cameras, but the firmware documentation mentions this:

“Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
If the computer cannot find the camera, the message “ Could not find the camera for this update.” appears on the computer display. Try the following if this happens.
-Disconnect the USB cable and connect it again.
-If the computer has multiple USB terminals, try with the other terminals.
(Your computer may have some USB terminals on the backside.)
      3. Connect the camera to the computer”

It’s very important that you use the Type A Male to Micro-B Male Cable supplied with your camera. Many third party cords only offer one-way communication and Sony firmware updates require two-way communication. If that is not the issue, you may need to try a different USB port on your PC.

  75. Hi Brian, I have a Sony a1 and would like to update the firmware. I am running a MacBook Pro with OS 11.4 How do I manage firmware updates when I only have a Mac with latest OS and also the high end camera from Sony. I am a bit confused as to why as a pro user owning and using Sony’s best and the Main OS for every pro photographer I know, Sony doesn’t get on the ball and catch up. The next Mac OS is due out in the next few months and yet Sony hasn’t caught up with the last. There must be a work around? I would switch camera systems to another brand before I switched from a Mac to something else. Is seems odd that Sony isn’t supporting their Pro end. There must be a work around for pros? Can I take my camera to a Sony retail shop and have them do the firmware update? I will be upgrading to Apples new silicon once they offer it on a 16″ MBP. It seems Sony has a grudge with Apple or something. Everything I use works with the latest Mac OS including all of my software: Adobe, Luminar, Topaz and yet Sony can’t figure is out? Any suggesting short of switching camera systems or is that my only option? Thank You, Ron

    1. MacOS 11 has been supported for all firmware updates released since March. Quoting from the Sony a1 Firmware 1.01 Release Notes:
“The latest version of the system software update is compatible with the following Macintosh versions:
      MacOS 10.14, 10.15, 11”

The new Apple M1 processor is another story. Unlike other software. Sony firmware updates won’t run using rosetta 2, so the new Apple chip is not yet supported. Fortunately Apple doesn’t change processor brands on a yearly basis. With any luck, M1 silicon chips one will be with us for a while.

That said, expect a similar support delay with the next yearly MacOS update…and the next after that… I strongly recommend Mac users turn off MacOS auto-updates and wait for the next MacOS to be fully compatible before even considering the update and be certain all their camera and lens firmware is 100% up to date before jusmping to the next MacOS.

As for Luminar & Topaz, they don’t operate through the USB port, but both Adobe & Capture One have issues tethering every time Apple releases a new MacOS with changes their USB Stack protocols.

  80. A few days ago I tried to update the firmware of my Sony Alpha 9 and at the end it stay bricked after a failed firmware updated. Since then I’ve been looking for a solution for more than 4 days by contacting Sony USA & Canada, Sony Japan, Sony Spain … technical services, foruns, technical reviews and on and on but I could only could find the solution on this page …

“It’s very important that you use the Type A Male to Micro-B Male Cable supplied with your camera. Many third party cords only offer one-way communication and Sony firmware updates require two-way communication. If that is not the issue, you may need to try a different USB port on your PC.”

      1. I too ran into problems on an old A7ii, the firmware just stopped dead during the update and appeared ‘bricked’ with the red light staying on the whole time the battery was installed. With thanks to this page (Brian) i tried 3 usb leads not having the original, 3rd lead worked a charm. I had basically resigned myself to a replacement camera. Only downside, i need another excuse to buy a new camera. If Sony felt inclined, I’m sure the installer could be programmed to look for two-way communication prior to/from the PC and camera before it commenced the installation. Thanks Brian & everyone

  81. I can’t even find the download link for the a7r3ma you cant use the a7r3m as the installer apparently it’s different.

    1. There are currently NO updates for Sony a7R IIIA. The camera ships with the latest firmware.
I would not expect any future updates beyond that unless needed for compatibility.

  83. Embarrassing that there is no updating via MAC 12.xx / Monterrey. Don’t upgrade your computer’s software because Sony is too lazy to figure it out? WEAK.

    1. Here’s the deal. Every year, Apple changes their MacOS and changes the USB-stack protocols which block operations like firmware updates. I’ve stopped issuing warnings about this as no one bothers to read them before jumping into a MacOS update. It will happen again with MacOS 13 and 14 and 15 and 16… If you simply must have the latest MacOS the moment it drops, you should expect compatibility issues. If you want to avoid them – simply wait until MacOS is compatible with all your software and hardware.

      1. Hi Brian – historically, has there been a time frame in which Sony makes their firmware updates compatible with the latest Mac OS? Thanks in advance for your help!

        1. As a Mac user since 1985, I’ve learned to stay a generation behind MacOS updates. I’m not certain why Apple feels the need to release a shiny new OS every year instead of concentrating on hardware, but if you stick to the previous generation – you still get all the security updates with none of the headaches.

  110. I desperately need to upgrade my a7III firmware and am running Monterey 12.4.
Is it impossible? Do I just use a crappy chromebook from my son’s school? Send it out to Sony?
    This is super aggravating!

    1. The most recent a7 III Firmware Update 4.01 was released on June 17, 2021 – long before MacOS 12 was released.

The update was compatible the three most recent MacOS at the time of release: 10.14, 10.15 & 11. Every time Apple releases a new MacOS they change the USB stack security protocols which breaks compatibility with firmware updates written for previous MacOS.

NEVER, EVER, EVER update your MacOS until ALL your camera & lens firmware is up to date and all software is 100% compatible with the new MacOS. I’ve posted this warning many times. No one seems to pay attention until it’s too late.

  126. Say you already updated to MacOS 13 and you get your shiny new A7RV only to find out the lenses need firmware updates. Any idea on how to have this happen? Why can’t this happen over in-camera WiFi yet?

    1. This happens with EVERY MacOS Update. Apple USB stack security protocols are very difficult to navigate. You need to find a friend running MacOS 12 or earlier or dare I say it…a PC. The lesson here is to NEVER, EVER, EVER update your MacOS to the next version until you’re 1000% certain everything is supported.
