Sony has quietly updated their a7R III and a7R IV cameras with improved LCD panels. The newly designated a7R IIIA (ILCE-7RM3A) & a7R IVA (ILCE-7RM4A) will get an upgrade from a 1.44 million dot LCD to a 2.36 million dot LCD. The new LCD is slightly more power hungry resulting in a rating of 10 fewer shots per NP-FZ100 battery based on the conservative battery specs for each camera. The EVFs remain unchanged in both cameras.
Each camera ships with the latest firmware right out of the box. Need to update to match previous models.

Brian, do you know if it will be possible to physically upgrade existing cameras?

Another question. The Alpha 1 appears to have about triple the resolution in the viewfinder as the a7riii. Is this another upgrade that might be made possible? I use the hell out of the focus magnifier, which would be the main effect for me.
If there was any intention to do that, it would have happened now. I would not be surprised to see that EVF in the a7R V. But would not expect it in either of these cameras.

I would think the A1 EVF is highly dependent on the improved dual processor. Probably would be impossible to add it to any older camera, not to mention very expensive.
Is there any hope that Sony will update the A7Riii firmware to include selectable focus point color, like on the A7Riv?
At this point, my guess is that would be a ‘no’
