Brian, the update in the Sony Page says it is for the A7R III and not the A7 III. AM I missing something?
Thanks David, it’s correct now.
Do you think they will release a firmware update that allows you to use exposure compensation in manual mode? For the life of me I can’t understand why they didn’t allow this.
The ONLY way that could possibly work is when Auto ISO is selected – and if it is – it works fine.
I am curious. Why would you want to use Exposure compensation in manual mode? Isn’t exposure compensation used to adjust/correct exposure bias on any of the auto-modes? Don’t you just correct exposure bias in manual mode by opening or closing either aperture or shutter speed?
The only possible scenario I can think of is when using Auto ISO which basically becomes an auto mode.
Yup. Exposure Compensation only works in some sort of Auto Mode. That includes Manual Shooting Mode with Auto ISO.
Thanks. That s what I thought.
Night photography, you want it to be at -5.0 to help pull out the stars. I don’t really like auto iso, I much prefer to dictate what iso I want to be at. I’m kinda of a iso 50 snob :).
Once again, Manual Exposure is Manual Exposure. The ONLY way EV Compensation would work with with Manual Setting would be IF you enabled Auto ISO. If you don’t want Auto ISO, you should at least understand WHY EV Compensation won’t work with manual settings.
Also, Stop using ISO 50. Native ISO is 100. Anything below that just crunches Dynamic Range.
Really?? I thought it would maximize it and help with noise level. Thanks for the tip!
Nope, any ISO below ISO 100 yields worse – not better – image quality. Go Native. Not Extended.
Will do. Btw- this camera has been amazing! Went on a 4 day shoot in southern Utah, used this side by side with my D4s and I gotta say, having the focus points going out to the edge of the viewfinder has been amazing. So many other benefits but this one makes such a difference. Composing so much quicker instead of going into live view.
Is there a page where I can find out HOW to upload the update into the camera? I get as far as “connect your camera’, which I do, then nothing happens. A7mk3 firmware upgrade.
There are step-by-step prompts as you go through. Be sure to read my Bulletproof Guide first. You’ll probably want to go straight to Firmware 2.00 which came out last week: https://briansmith.com/sony-releases-firmware-update-2-00-for-a7-iii-a7r-iii/
