Did I read correctly somewhere that the teleconverters do not work on the 70-200 f4? And do you have an opinion btw the 70-300 vs 70-200 f4? Doesn’t seem fair to throw the 2.8 in there 🙂 Thanks! (I read many of your blogs and really appreciate them by the way.)
That’s correct. The FE teleconverters are only compatible with the FE 70-200 2.8 GM and 100-400 4.5-5.6 GM and possibly future lenses.
The FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS and FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS are both very good lenses. It really boils down to whether you need a fixed F4 aperture or the reach of 300mm

Sony FE 24-240 F3.5-6.3 OSS is good for what it is – an all-in-one zoom – but Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS Lens will offer better image quality.
Hey Brian, I am stuck on my next purchase. I want a wildlife and bird lens. Do you think the 70-300 has enough reach for bird and bif lens or should i go with the sigma 150-600 with mc11 adapter for my Sony a6000?
AF with the Sigma 150-600 is going to crap out around 300-350mm on a6000. The best option by far (though not the cheapest) is the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens – it’s got dual AF motors so it will smoke any 150-600 superzoom.
Curious if the Sony 70-300 loses sharpness when it’s all the way out at 300mm? I have a canon 70-300, and I really can’t go beyond about 250mm without sacrificing some sharpness. Wondering if this is the same. Thanks in advance! Your site is a tremendous resource!
Like most Sony FE lenses, the Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS Lens is considerably sharper than the Canon version – all the way to 300mm.
Hi Brian I’m in the process of buying either the Sony 70-300 or the Sony 70-200 f4 i shoot mainly landscape. What would you suggest out the two? I currently have the Sony a7riii.
Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS offers slightly better optical quality, but it’s biggest advantage is the constant F4 max aperture. But if you can live with F5.6 through most of the range,
Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS is an incredible travel zoom thanks to its compact size and extra range out to 300mm.
Hi Brian, I plan on taking pictures of my kids soccer games and indoor volleyball. I use an A7III and debating on either the 70-200 F4 or the 70-300. Any advice you can give would be great.
F5.6 is too slow for indoor volleyball.
200mm is ok soccer with APS-C cameras but too short with fullframe cameras like a7 series.
