Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM ($1,598) and Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art ($1,599) both offer excellent optical performance, but Sony GM is better corrected for sagittal lens flare resulting in cleaner astrophotography images. Sony GM also offers much smoother bokeh due to use of two XA (eXtreme Aspherical) elements.

Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM weighs in at just 37% the weight of the massive 2.7 lb Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art.Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM is less than 2/3 the length of Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art.

Thanks to its nearly silent XD Linear AF motors, the Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM offers much faster and quieter autofocus than Sigma’s rotational stepping motors.

Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM has a de-clickable aperture ring. Sigma does not.

Best of all, the Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM actually costs a buck less than the Sigma behemoth.

  1. Size comparison Sony GM is the natural choice plus the added bonus of a GM native lens any other choice would be madness.

  2. Wow! Thanks for that comparison! I thought it was already impressive without seeing how much smaller it was than comparative lenses.

  3. Bought the Sigma TANK in 2019 due to reviews for astro Milky Way. Sigma made an adapter for it’s lenses for Sony and the 14mm f/1.8 just has it built in making it LONG. It is very heavy, needs a foot to attach to a tripod because is heavier than your camera! At 1.8 it does have comatic aberration or star distortions have to use at f/2 or f/2.8. To be clear I have had the FE 1635 f/4 since 2015 and FE 1224 f/4 since 2017 both give perfect stars and the FE 1224 f/2.8 2020 the most amazing used with the A7siii (great photos) this MW season. f/1.8 is great for stopping motion in the dark or great bokeh. This prime lens looks like the 20mm f/1.8 (very great) and the 24mm f/1.4 and will be great in the night if on par with the 20mm. Extra is the fact that 1224 f/2.8 I found clarity of the MW from right to left be clear and able to be seen with bright monitoring. Each image in a 10 frame pano were equally clear even through high clouds and sky glow. At f/1.8 this Sony lens should fly off the selves and will be in many bags.
