Sony has released Firmware Update fw 2.00 for Sony a6000 (ILCE-6000) cameras which adds XAVC S format movie recording and shortens camera start-up time.
Improvements over version 1.20:
Startup time is shortened
Adds support for recording movies in the XAVC S format that supports high bit rates (NTSC: 60p/30p/24p PAL: 50p/25p)
Notes: When recording a movie in the XAVC S format, you must use a Class 10 or faster SDXC card. If you format the memory card, all of the data will be erased. Please make sure that the data on the card is backed up before formatting the card.

Sony A6000 Firmware 2.0 updated v1.20 properly. However, now Sony A6000 will not format the SDXC 64GB. It can be formatted in my RX100, but can no longer be formatted by A6000.
I don’t have an a6000 to test, but I’ll have Sony Pro Support look into that. What brand of SDXC card are you having problems formatting?

thanks Brian. Worked the first time I tried it on an old mac running 10.6.8
thanks for the tips and the link brother 🙂
Yunno it’s funny you say that Pat, our pal Bob Krist says he keeps an old Mac laptop running 10.6 for updates and he’s never had a problem…

I just purchased a new Sony a6000. It’s firmware is currently version 1.0. Does it need to have version 1.20 before upgrading to 2.0 or can I go straight to 2.0?
Thank you,
You can go straight to 2.00 David. Previous updates are included in each version. If you’re not familiar with Sony updates, please read all my warnings and suggestions. It’s pretty bulletproof if you follow all of them. Updates take about 15 minutes, so have a cold beverage and just leave the camera to do it’s thing…
Thank you.
DG
Just initiated an update attempt but was unable to get the LCD screen to turn off as the instructions stated. Tried all three usb ports to no avail. Everything else seemed to be in order. Any suggestions?
TIA
When I ran the update my screen stayed on a Sony Splash screen rather than turning off. After trying the whole process again from start and the same splash screen being on, I continued following the instructions just as described when the screen should have been off and all went fine.
You do have to follow the instructions exactly in all other respects.
I updated my a6000 to v2.0 and to my horror, it seems like there is some kind of a problem with the sync between the e-curtain and the shutter release. I get frames that are half red while the other half is the picture I intended to take.
any ideas?

You have me stumped on that one. I’ve never seen it before. That’s a question for Sony support – maybe they’ve run into something like that before. What country are you in?
Currently in Israel.
I’ve contacted Sony support, hope they will answer quickly.
Hi Nati,
Any update about this issue ? I considered to upgrade the firmware,
Thanks
Most people are not reporting issues with the update. I will say that with any Sony firmware updates, it’s VERY important to follow the steps very carefully and read all my suggestions/warnings such as shutting down all other software, etc while running updates.
So I talked to a Sony representative who said I am the only one sony know about with that problem and asked me to send the camera for inspection.
After doing some more digging (other forums with users encountering the same problem), the problem is connected somehow to having a third party lens and v2.0 update (it’s not a camera malfunction, some users have sent the camera to Sony and got it back as is since there was nothing to fix at the first place).
I use the touit 32mm and so are some other users who reported the same problem. Some of them suggested a lens update although I am not sure this is the right solution.
That’s all I’ve got .
Cheers
It helps to know where the issue is in order to find a fix. I’ll test that out to see if I can replicate the issue.
Here is how my story ends:
In short, the camera update did not support third party lenses.
I have sent my Touit 32mm/f 1.8 to Germany to get a firmware update ( to version .02)
Ever since, I have no problems with this set.
Thanks for everybody for helping.
Cheers
Aha, yes that Zeiss Touit update came back in January.
It would seem like you’re not the only one:

hi there, just updated to 2.0 for the a6000 and everything looks ok, cam wise but my sd card has an error saying the cards data is lost and needs to be recoverd…the recover option isnt working….help please
Did you remove the card before running the update? Does it say Data is lost or Database? Database just refers to the folder that images are saved to. If that’s the case – just click ok.
Are user settings retained after the update or will it be wiped to factory settings?
In my experience user most users settings are retained with Sony updates, but there could always be some that I have not set that are not.
hi brian, i upgraded an a6000 v1 to v2 on a mac 10.11 (i know) last night. the upgrade appeared to work successfully and then i shot a couple of pics. powered off. this morning i am unable to select a focus mode w 18-55mm attached. camera sez “lens not attached”. tried other aps-c lenses after verification on a nex-7. to no avail. i removed the battery, factory reset etc to no avail. any ideas or do i have to resort to precision repair.
This firmware update was released before OS 10.11 and it is not a supported OS. I’m not saying it can’t work – it’s simply not supported.
Any idea if running this from a Win10 machine will brick the camera?
Windows 10 is a supported OS.
Please follow my tips carefully an you should be good to go!
Hey Brian, thanks for that, apparently however Windows 10 is not supported – it isn’t listed in any of the supported OS and I had a Sony customer service rep indicate that Windows 10 isn’t a supported OS. Do you have other documentation that shows contradicts this?
Read the download notes. Windows 10 is supported.
I have searched all over Sony pages and read all possible download notes – but there is no mention of how to update ILCE-6000 firmware if using Windows 10.
Either find a friend with Windows 7 or 8 or wait for the next firmware update.
I have 2 Macs, one is running 10.10.5 but has a core 2 duo processor, the other is running 10.11.1. I’d like to update my A6000 firmware but I think my only option is to wait until there is a 10.11 patch?
Yup. Or find a friend running 10.7-10.10
I discover that the function EYE AF disappeared, it is now impossible to assing this function to a button.
I received my a6000 yesterday from Costco and it already had version 2.0 on it. When I try and record in XAVC S format it says card doesn’t support this. It came with a 32gb sony class10 SDHC. Yes I tried to format it first. Should that card be able to record XAVC S?
Nope. You need SDXC class 10 to record XAVC S. SDXC means 64 Gb or larger
Have successfully updated firmware using Win10 x64.
Tom how did you get it to update on Win10 x64? It is not listed as on OS on the website
Metz Mecablitz 44 AF-1 does not work anymore on the a6000 after upgrade 2.0 or 3.10. very sad.
I’m not familiar with that flash but it’s extremely likely theses events are unrelated. There’s nothing is Sony firmware that controls third-party flash, but it’s possible the flash itself needs a firmware update. Please consult the manufacturer.
hi Brian,
