Meyer Optik announces development of Biotar 58mm & 75mm F1.5 II lenses based on classic Biotar lens design available in a wide range of lens mounts including fullframe Sony E-mount. Both lenses will be available for a retail price of €999 including VAT. Delivery date is not yet announced.
Launched in the mid-1930s, the original Biotar 2/58 was offered for about 25 years, making it the longest and best-selling Biotar in this lens series to date. The new version of the extremely popular, very versatile lens, also delivers in its modern version, as Biotar 58 f1.5 II, its incomparable charm and comes up with excellent imaging characteristics.
With the new Biotar 58 f1.5 II, an absolute classic has been revived and perfected at the same time. Intensive development work has made it possible to retain the image language, the bokeh and the otherwise so popular characteristics of the original Biotar 58 f2.0, while at the same time increasing the speed to f1.5. Thus, both new Biotar editions, the Biotar 75 II and the Biotar 58 II, offer a speed of f1.5.
The high image sharpness in the center, coupled with a strong swirly bokeh, are the legendary imaging characteristics of the Biotar 75 f1.5 II. In swirly bokeh, highlights in the background are rendered in a circular shape and appear as if they have been drawn into a vortex. The sharpness in the center of the image and the wonderfully drawn bokeh in the blur give the subject a slightly three-dimensional feel. At the same time, the overall image appears somewhat delicate, which can create a great contrast in available light situations with clear shadows and highlights in the background.

I have a few modern Meyer-Optik Gorlitz E-mount lenses – but I do not own any vintage.
