While improvements to the AF system grabbed the headlines when the FE 70-200 F2.8 GM OSS II was released – it’s great to see confirmation of what users already know – the optics ROCK! Quoting DxOMARK:
“The original Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS was already a very good performer, but it looks as if pressure from rivals (Canon’s RF 70-200mm F2.8 weighs just 1070 g) to lower the weight in this type has resulted in this newer GM2 version. Against its predecessor and the relatively new Nikon Nikkor Z 70-200mm F2.8 VR S (which at 1440 g is just 40 g less than the original Sony), the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II performs well and comes out in front.”

How does it compare to the f4 version?
Hi Dennie! Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS gets a DxO Mark Score: 34 | DxO Sharpness: 35
I really thought the f4 was better than that????
That’s best-in-class for 70-200 F4’s and better than some of the 70-200 F2.8’s on this list…
When we were doing Canon we had both the f4 and f2.8 and we always felt the f4 was sharper. But maybe Sony is different.
A lot of people believed that was the case, but you can see results here.
I see the numbers today but I was just comparing Canon 2.8 70-200 vs Canon f4 back then 10-15 years ago. The Sony 2.8 70-200 definitely wins today both against the other brands and the Sony f4 70-200…..Thanks for the valuable info.
