He’s been court side to photograph championships by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan and photographed iconic portraits of All-Stars Dwayne Wade, Shaquille O’Neal. His portraits capture the personality of golf legends Jack Nichlaus, Gary Player, Greg Norman, Sergio Garcia and even the late-great Gene Sarazen. Smith was on the the sidelines for the glory years of Miami Hurricanes football and he photographed portraits of rising stars like Ed Reed and Phillip Buchanon.
Brian Smith’s first magazine photograph appeared in LIFE Magazine when Smith was a 20-year-old student at the University of Missouri. Five years later, Smith won the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for his photographs of the Los Angeles Olympic Games. His iconic photograph of Greg Louganis hitting his head on the diving board at the Seoul Olympics won first place in both World Press Photo and the Pictures of the Year competition and was selected as one of the ‘Greatest Sports Photographs of the 20th Century’ by Photo District News magazine.
