RIP John Prine. Dead at 73 from complications related to COVID-19. Prine was one of my favorite portrait subjects. I shot this portrait for Rolling Stone in his Nashville home using a single 500 watt tungsten spotlight. After the shoot he invited me to stay for turkey dinner and Monday night football. He was a true artist and a lovely human who will be missed by all who met him.

  1. Brian, a great image of a great man. I watched him perform about 4-5 years ago at the Ryman with Steve Earle. He was a bit in pain from the ravages of cancer but still adhered to the philosophy that the show must go on.

I have followed his work for nearly 20 years now. At that moment, during a Thursday night in Nashville, I had a chance to witness greatness onstage.

    In spite of ourselves.
