Adventure photographer Chris Burkard is a senior staff photographer for Surfer magazine who contributes regularly to international publications and companies like as Patagonia. Burkard spent eight years seeking out remote surf in the most rugged conditions in the world. In the process, he has established himself as a major photographer in the surf and outdoor community.
It’s my great pleasure to showcase his work and welcome Chris as one of Sony’s Associate Artisans of Imagery. If you’re coming to Photo Plus Expo in New York this month – be sure to stop by Sony Booth 519 on October 30-31st to hear Chris speak and see more of his great images.
Arctic Swell – Surfing the Ends of the Earth
Burkard travelled with Professional Surfers Patrick Millin, Brett Barley, and Chadd Konig brave sub-zero temperatures in the Arctic Circle to capture moments of raw beauty in conditions that rank among the harshest in the natural world. The bitterly cold seas and wind exact a large price on their minds and bodies, but the reward – adventure, amazement, and self-knowledge – draws them closer together and pushes them to tackle the next frontier in surfing.

Distant Shores:
Surfing the Ends of the Earth
Distant Shores is the latest book from the award-winner photographer Chris Burkard. Spanning six continents the book encompasses Chris’ surf trips from the remote coastlines of the Arctic to the crowded streets of India. Chris Burkard’s photographs are puncutated by energized landscapes and moments of bliss, by adventure seeking and the lifestyle that it encompasses, and by movement and intuitive light-working capabilities. With the ocean as his main muse, Burkard has consistently captured this subject in timeless and expansive photographic impressions, utilizing the tool of surfing to approach the ocean’s intricate personality and then extending out to include the human personalities that draw meaning from this same source. Searching for wild, remote destinations and offbeat landscapes, Burkard portrays placement of the human in contrast to nature. (Order Here)
