Hi brian, you might also want to look the smallrig new l-brackets most seem to have copied their old design (of the 20mm grip). For the sony A7R4 they will design several new ones. One of them is not in pre-order : https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-l-bracket-for-sony-a7r-iv-lcs2417.html and included many new small features like sony type rubber on the outside/inside for more comfy feel. It will be the first in a range and extra parts will be designed for extending it again.
Good Morning Brian
Stabil LSIV – L Plate (Bracket) for Sony A7RIV (Orange)
It looks like you need to slide out the side bracket to attach a remote shutter release?
You don’t need to extend the bracket when shooting horizontally with a release – but you do for verticals.
Thanks! I’ll add that to the list. All L-plates on this list are redesigned for the shape of the a7R IV grip.
tnx sorry should have been more clear, i helped on most of the older models and we added new features compared to them (yes redesigned for R4 is one) but also a few other things. i have a youtube video on it i made and will review once i get a unit. Next to that there will probably also be a ‘pro’ version (like the 2236 for the R3/M3) later. Smallrig updates for models about once a year. Tnx for adding it to the list. Its so nice to see many products out already with different styles and pricepoints.
There are several more products underway, but smallrig is very open to co-design so join their facebook group and just ask. my guess is first ‘half’ cage will be of the 2236 type so a l-bracket that can turn into a half-cage on demand.
smallRig Half cage arca was my choice for the A7R3… i hope they will produce one for the 4…
I still can’t understand why no camera body have an arca dovetail incorporated !
The Kirk L bracket BL-A7R4 is in stock if you order direct from Kirk. I got mine about two weeks ago. It works well, but it is $150. Fits my RRS ball head fine. The doors are easy to open for hooking up my intervalometer.
PSL A7RIV made by Sunwayfoto is also available !
I will go with the smallrig because i shoot 80% of the time tethered… and the optional cable clamp 2259 is nice to have !
Good evening, Brian,
I’ve been very happy with my Really Right Stuff L-Brackets and am practically wed to them, as my straps are now fitted with D-Rings that lock into the brackets. I just received my new Sony a9 Mark II and am hoping RRS will create a bracket set for this camera, but haven’t found any place to preorder one. Do you know if they will be creating one —or if, perhaps, the a7r Mark IV set will serve?
Sony a7 IV and a9 II have the same body dimensions and share accessories like the same vertical drive and L-plates. Ergo the headline 😉
Thanks for detailing the options. There seems to be a big price range so I am wondering which you recommend most. I have the RRS for my a7riii and wonder if less expensive options are as good. Thank you for any info.
RRS camera brackets are unquestionably the best quality of the bunch. It’s just depends on your budget and how long you plan to hold onto your camera.
I’ve found one can rarely go wrong with gear from RRS. They’re my default for brackets, tripods, ball heads, pano-gimbal heads and pretty much anything else upon which you can mount a camera. You pay a premium for their made-in-USA, beautifully designed items, but I’ve never regretted the decision to go RRS.
I bought the Really Right Stuff Modular L-Plate Set for Sony Alpha a1. I’m really uncomfortable with the little finger and It is also relatively thin and I was more comfortable which was thicker. They don’t give any option to contact anything on the side and it sucks a lot. It’s Very expensive and I’m really not happy with it.
I bought cheap bracket in 20$ and it’s so Mach better
Hey Brian, do you have the orange L bracket available for A7R V ?
It’s available on eBay
Hey Brian, great article, thanks! Could one securely attach a peak design dual plate to the RRS l-bracket made for the a7rv? I have a capture clip and it’s instrumental for my way of shooting. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Hello Axel, I’d probably do one or the other – but not both together.
