Pingback: Flashpoint TTL HSS Speedlight Hotshoe Flashes for Sony
Hi Brian,
Any news on when the Flashpoint XPLOR600 HSS strobe with R2 for Sony will be released? I saw somewhere (can’t remember where) that is would be available in May or so. Do you know when it will become available and in-stock instead of preorder-able?
My Flashpoint XPLOR 600 TTL HSS Flash arrived on Thursday, but the R2 trigger has not yet arrived. Looking forward to testing it out once it ships. The flash is very nice and the battery is surprisingly light for 600 w/s.
I guess you could use the flash in optical until the trigger arrives? I ordered the kit as well and don’t expect the trigger to show with it as well.
Make sure you take advantage of charging battery overnight when it arrives. Always a good practice for best battery life.
At what power ratios does the HSS work? Is the flash duration 1/220 second in HSS? Thanks.
HSS is to the max shutter speed of the camera, but with HSS, the higher the shutter speed you select, the less output you get.
My question regarding power ratios was regarding the power on the flash (i.e. 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128, 1/256), not shutter speed on the camera.
I believe so but won’t know for certain until the Flashpoint Sony Triggers arrive (would should be in the next week or so…)
My second question regarding flash duration was not about the speed of the shutter but rather the speed of the flash when synced in HSS mode. I have been reading about flashes with slower flash duration, such as found on the Priolite MBX 500 Hot Sync, doing a better job of syncing at fast shutter speeds. Sorry for the confusion,
Flash duration varies for each model of flash and always drops when you lower the output. See the manufacturers specs – but be warned that most manufacturers list “Peak-to-Peak” flash duration which is roughly 50% the full flash duration so a good rule of thumb is to figure the duration is 2x of whatever they list.
Thank you.
Do you know if the Godox X1s can control the XPLOR 600 ? I can get the Godox Sony trigger (which Adorama ‘version’ is pre-order still at), and can get the XPLOR 600 from Adorama. But can they work together? Any idea?
I have not had a chance to test since neither my Godox or Flashpoint triggers have shown up yet – only the XPLOR 600 flash.
Hi Brian, really appreciate the write ups on the new Flashpoint options for the Sony system. I remain unhappy with the performance of the F60 flash (on my second one having burned out the first) and it’s penchant for overheating. Sony supposedly performed the upgrade on my current flash at PhotoPlus, but the way it shuts down I wonder if it actually took. I also have the Nissin Di700A and wireless controller which doesn’t overheat, but doesn’t have the power or head flexibility of movement of the F60 (but does take the same batter pack plug). The new Flashpoint options are quite intriguing and it will be interesting to see how they actually perform (hopefully you’ll provide some further thoughts on this when you have had a chance to put them through their paces).
As to John’s question about the Godox wireless controller working with the Flashpoint Xplor flash, I have seen a video by Manny Ortiz (I think that’s his name) showing the advantages of shooting with a flash over ambient light only, and he was using the Godox controller and Flashpoint Xplor (and an A7RII with the 85 GM lens), and it definitely was working for him.
Hi Brian,
I received my Godox AD600 b and the X1 trigger 2 days ago,. Everything is working smoothly with one exception. When I am using the X1 controller to adjust TTL to e.g. -0.7, I cannot see this value on the AD600’s display. In manual mode changes are immediately visible. Could you confirm this or can you see your X1 adjustments on the flash`s display? Thank you!!!
Am I confused or is possible to use a Xplor 600 for Nikon on a Sony with the Sony X1 transmitter by upgrading the firmware on the 600?
You should confirm that with the manufacturer.
Thanks Brian
Should I be able to use the Xplor 600 with this c-stand without adding any extra parts?
http://www.adorama.com/fplsc.html
Thanks
Yes, Xplor has a 5/8″ stand adapter and C-stands are 5/8″
Thanks Brian. I am debating between this one and the Impact:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/850444-REG/Impact_ls_ct40mbk_Turtle_Base_C_Stand_Kit.html
Have you tried either by any chance?
Thanks again
Are you planning to shoot in a studio or on location?
Ideally both. I have some regular stands already but want this for the flexibility placing the beauty dish in front of the subject out of the camera eye sight.
I will be using either the Joel Grimes beauty dish or more likely the new Fotodiox 32″ ez-pro beauty dish (about 3.5lbs)
Thanks!
That’s why I asked. DON’T even consider taking C-Stands on location. They’re made of stell and weigh as much as a battleship yet have a small base that’s worthless on a windy day umless you weigh them down with 2-3 25 pound sandbags. Read this instead: Best Light Stands for Location Photography
C-Stand arms are still a useful tool. Just ditch the C-Stand.
Ok so to clarify, I am not flying anywhere yet to take photos, just local so far.
Ok so the main issue is the weight and lack of stability. I see. Well I do have 4 sandbags just in case but since you recommend a regular stand instead but said that the c-stand arm are still useful…what do you use when you want to place say, the beauty dish centered with the subject’s face and not having the stand blocking your camera?
I read your link and will look into those recommended stands but still not sure if I can just get a c-stand arm and add it to one of those tripods you suggested without any extra parts.
Sorry, I am a noob to c-stands.
Thanks again!
I don’t recommend C-Stands for location photography, period. Trust me.
I surely trust you since your work is fantastic. So how do you place a beauty dish out of the way of the camera but right in front of the subject? Assistant maybe?
Thanks again!
As I mentioned. there’s nothing wrong with C-Stands arms – just the C-Stands themself. The arms work fine on any 5/8″ stand including the Avenger Alu-Baby stands mentioned here.
Brian – any updates? I’m very keen to find a HSS compatible flash solution for my Sony alpha rig (a7r ii).
Hi Marc. I’m working on a post comparing all the 400-600 Watt/sec HSS flash options for Sony cameras. There are quite a few now.
i have a sony a6500 and the xplor 600 r2 with r2 transmitter . i can set the power to 1/256 on the strobe itself but the hot shoe remote can only be set to 1/128. when the strobe is set it to 1/256 it will fire via remote at 1/256 (even though remote says 1/128) but once i adjust the power level via the remote the strobe can not be set back to 1/256 because the remote only goes down to 1/128 unless i walk up to the strobe and put it back to 1/256. so in summary, the remote will only allow 1/128.. why is this! i want 1/256 power
That may have been one of the thing they addressed with the new Flashpoint R2 Pro 2.4GHz Transmitter for Sony (XPro-S)
You need to go the Menu options and change option 5 from 1/128 to 1/256.
This video shows you how to do it:
But … But … the TTL just doesn’t work. I have two and have friends that also have multiples. TTL is just about useless.
