Tamron Announces SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 in Sony A-Mount

Tamron-SP-150-600mm-F5-6-3-G2

Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 in Sony A-Mount (Pre-Order for $1,399) offers improved optical design and performance from Tamron’s previous version plus an Arca-type compatible foot on the tripod collar for ease of use on monopods and tripods.

In addition to Sony A-mount DSLRs, this lens can also be used on Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras using a Sony LA-EA3 Lens Mount Adapter. (Please Note: this combination will offer fastest AF performance with a7II, a7RII and a6300.)

Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 features an optimized optical design with three low dispersion (LD) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range. eBAND and BBAR coatings have also been applied to reduce ghosting and flare when working in strong, backlit lighting conditions.

The G2 version of this lens also incorporates a FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism to permit locking the zoom position at any focal length position to prevent accidental zoom extension. Conventional zoom lock is also featured to prevent barrel extension during transport. A ring-type Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor delivers notably quick and accurate focusing performance to suit working with fast-moving subjects, and full-time manual focus is also supported for fine-tuned control.

The lens also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to guard against dirt, dust, moisture, and smudging from affecting image quality. The ergonomic and durable metal construction of the lens also incorporates textured focus and zoom rings, and a removable, rotating tripod collar with an Arca-type compatible foot is supplied to better enable shooting from tripods and monopods.

  1. Hey Brian, Do you have any read from Tamron on when the G2 version of this lens will be available and shipping for the Sony A-mount? I have been patiently waiting since before Christmas and am wondering if I should just buy the current model.

  2. Any Feedback using Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for Canon EF
with Sigma MC-11 ..I have Sony A6500 ..Thanks!

      1. Thanks!..I really want this lens but I can’t find anyone using it with the MC-11 adapter .

        Cheers ! Brian

  3. Dear Brian,
I want a telephoto lens for my A7II.
I have the adapter MC-11, and i’m think to buy the sigma 150-600mm is not to use professionally as my other lenses. Is to shoot some surf.
Do you think the Tamron 150-600mm + LA-EA3 is a better solution?
    Many Thanks,
    All the Best
    Goncalo

    1. Hey Goncalo, the Tamron G2 might be slightly better, though honestly ALL the 150-600s struggle for AF above 450mm. The issue is that they all use a single AF group – unlike Sony’s FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM and FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM lenses. Dual AF is more costly to produce – but it works a lot better. Unfortunately Sony doesn’t make a native FE lens in that range yet (and I doubt it will sell for a grand if they did…)

  4. Dear Brian,
Any thoughts on the Di USD vs the Di USD G2 for sony a7rii or a7riii. There is a serious discount on the Di right now…and a $400 difference between the two. Don’t know how important the zoom lock is; increased weather resistance might be nice as would be arca mount. Most important to me is image quality – then autofocus. Thanks.

  5. Hi Brian,
I am currently using this Tammy(A mount version with LA-EA3)) on my trusted A7ii for birding. Results are great.
How about using this adapter-lens combination on A6500? Is there anyone who has used it for birding? Will the CAF & 11 FPS work properly?
    Thnak you in advance.

  6. Hi Brian- I have the a7r111 and the tamron g2 150-600- withe the sony ea4 adaptor- focusing on birds at 5-600 are not sharp in auto and the focus magnification does not work-in manual. at 600 it is difficult to focus on the bird even if stationary. I’m wondering if I have a faulty lens or is that with all of them? I used a sony 1-400 with 1.5 extender and my pictures were sharper than with the tamron. I bought this lens for birding 2 weeks ago, but have not gotten very sharp images.

    1. That’s just the reality of 150-600 superzooms. If you check DxO tests, they’re all sharpest up to 400mm – them not so much after that. Price is a greater objective than sharpness.

    2. That’s just the reality of 150-600mm superzooms. If you check DxO tests, they’re all sharpest up to 400mm – then not so much after that. They’re good for the price point.
