Gear Review: SRs Quad Battery Charger for Sony Mirrorless NP-FW50 Batteries

SRs-Quad-Battery-Charger-Sony

SRs Quad Battery Charger for Sony Mirrorless NP-FW50 Batteries (Retail Price $59.00 / Special Introductory Price $39.00 Available Here) is a 4-bay battery charger that allows you to charge four Sony NP-FW50 batteries simultaneously. It’s also the first third-party charger that I can give a thumbs up!

This 4-bay charger is designed and sold by my fellow Sony Artisan Scott Robert Lim who designed it after he found he needed for a multi-bay charger while shooting still and videos at weddings with multiple cameras. [Full Disclosure: Scott is not only a good friend – he’s much brighter than me.]

AC Charging:

The Quad Charger can easily charge up to four batteries simultaneous from you have access to AC power. Charge lights glow red while charging and turn green when fully charged. There is no percentage indicator, but for the ability to charge four batteries at once I can live without that. Charging speed is comparable to Sony chargers – you don’t want faster – ultrafast charging kills battery life.

DC Charging:

You can also use a USB Power Bank like those used to charge smart phones. I was able to charge two batteries at once using my Anker 20,000mAh Portable Ultra High Capacity Power Bank ($39.99 here). [Please Note: USB Powerbanks with less output might only be able to charge one battery at a time.] You can also charge batteries on the road by connecting your laptop to the charger’s USB power port using the USB cord supplied with your camera.

Specs:

Compatible AC Voltage: 110-240V 50/60Hz
Output DC: 8.4 x 600mA x 4
Micro USB Input: 5v-8.4v x 300mA X2
Size: 5″³ x 3″³ x 0.75″³ (127mm x 76mm x 19mm)

SRs Quad Battery Charger is quite compact for a 4-bay charger – just 5″³ x 3″³ x 0.75″³ (127mm x 76mm x 19mm). That’s actually smaller than some of the 2-bay chargers on the market so it easily fits into your camera bag or roller.

The Skinny

The first “must have” accessory on my list for any Sony mirrorless camera owner is an external battery charger. If you only shoot sparingly with a single Sony mirrorless body, you’ll likely be perfectly happy with a Sony BC-TRW W Series Battery Charger ($39.99 – Available Here).

BUT if you’re a photojournalist or a wedding, event or sports photographer who shoots stills or video all day long using with multiple cameras, SRs Quad Battery Charger will simplify your battery charging needs.

At the $39 introductory price you can afford to buy a couple of these and plug all your batteries in before you go to sleep so you won’t need to get up in the middle of the night to rotate in more batteries before your next shoot.

Compatible with:

Any Sony Mirrorless camera that uses NP-FW50 batteries including: Sony a3000, a5000, a5100, a6000, Sony a6300, Sony a7, a7R, a7S, a7II, a7RII, a7SII, NEX-3, NEX-3N, NEX-C3, NEX-F3K, NEX-5, NEX-5K, NEX-5N, NEX-5R, NEX-5T, NEX-6, NEX-7, NEX7, SLT-A33, SLT-A35, SLT-A37, SLT-A55V, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10, RX10 II, RX10 III

  1. Received mine yesterday. Love it! Works like a charm. I can see this being a huge plus in my camera tool kit. Thanks Robert Lim!

  2. They sure could have made that a lot smaller for travel, by not making it a tray, but a flat stick, that can hold 2 batteries on each side.

This is a waste of space and plastic…

I’m not arguing the function, that is certainly most useful. But those photo-backpacks and roll-aboard trolleys don’t have infinite space, let alone weight :p

    1. I’ve heard that from one other person, so I double-checked mine running 3 batches of 4 batteries and all batteries charged to 100%. I have with me right now on a week-long trip to Thailand and I LOVE it for travel, and yes I’m getting a 100% charge here too.

Are you possibly using 3rd party batteries???

  3. I have two of these because I thought the first one was defective. With four batteries that need charging, I get 3 red charging lights and one green one. Unknown if the one green one is charging or not or for what purpose. The second one I purchased does the same thing. I’m confused.

    1. Red indicates “charging”. Green means “charged”.
If you’re charging using A/C power you can charge four batteries simultaneously.
If you’re charging using a power bank you can charge two batteries at a time.
