Sony Releases a7 III Firmware Update 4.01

Sony a7 III Firmware Update 4.01

Sony has released a7 III Firmware Update 4.01 which fixes an issue where the battery level indicator may not be displayed correctly when using a vertical grip. Even if you don’t use a vertical grip, I always recommend updating your camera to the latest firmware as there are always a few additional bug fixes not listed in the update notes.

  1. Thank You for the heads up on another firmware update for the A7iii. Problem encountered: Update was going smooth until the end when it stated “could not complete the update” and follow instructions! That being done the camera has the version 4.01 and if not complete reran update but detected the 4.01 and well can not know if completely done! Is it or is it not? I followed to the point!

    1. Hello Ed, if the camera menu shows version 4.01 everything ran properly

      Menu > Setup > Version

  2. Hi, I’m on MacOS 11.4

    – I’ve correctly installed the camera driver and authorized the extension in system preferences
    – I’m using a fully charged battery

    – I’ve closed all other programs and apps
    – I’m using the USB cable that came with the camera
    – I’ve removed all external drives and devices
    – No SD card in the camera
    – No vertical grip
    – Tried the other usb port and other usb cables

Tried many times the procedure suggested by the updater, when it cannot proceed:
“Complete the following procedures to connect the update target camera to the computer with a USB cable.

    1. Turn on the camera.
    2. select [USB Connection] from [Setup] in the camera’s menu screen and verify that the connection method is set to [Mass Storage].
    3. Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable.
    4. Click the [Next] button when the connection has been made.”

    No success

    Any idea?
    Thanks

    1. One thing I’ve noticed is that it’s very important not to connect the camera until the prompts tell you to do so is Step 3. If it’s connected before Step 3 the update won’t run.

FWIW: I only use the USC-C port for updates with cameras like a7 III that have one.

      1. thanks, unfortunately I’m already following the instruction to the letter.
        Camera set to mass storage.
        Using a usb C cable.
I open the program, I switch on the camera, connect to computer, wait for the icon of the mass storage to appear on the desktop, click next in the updater.
It tries to verify the connection, then it fails..

          1. Thanks again for your help!
This is what the updater presents me as steps to connect:

“Complete the following procedures to connect the update target camera to the computer with a USB cable.
            1 .Turn on the camera.
2.Select [USB Connection] from [Setup] in the camera’s menu screen and verify that the connection method is set to [Mass Storage].
            3. Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable.
4.Click the [Next] button when the connection has been made.”

I’m assuming “Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable” means physically insert the cable, and “when the connection has been made” means the camera has been mounted by the operating system as disk.
Which is what I’m doing. Then the updater start checking if it can communicate with camera and fails.

Should I insert the usb cable and wait for the updater to tell me to click next?

          2. Should I insert the usb cable and wait for the updater to tell me to click next?

            Yes.

          3. As soon as you see “USB Mass Storage” on the camera back press Next in the update window. Ignore everything on your desktop. Focus on the System Software Update window. Once that goes to “Run the Update” just walk away for 15 minutes.

          4. “As soon as you see “USB Mass Storage” on the camera back press Next in the update window. Ignore everything on your desktop.”

When I do this The updater goes like this: https://imgur.com/HtfwOgt

” Once that goes to “Run the Update” just walk away for 15 minutes.”

It never gets to that point. it stops and presents this message: https://imgur.com/KQZWwhM

Of course I’ve tried to follow the steps outlined in the error message, with no success.

It just cannot communicate properly with the camera…

          5. Have you tried removing the battery and restarting the computer as it suggests? If so, you need to run Camera Driver after each reboot when running firmware updates.

Don’t expect to see PM Home on your desktop. The app only launches when a memory card is detected – which I exactly why I suggest removing SD cards so that particular app doesn’t launch.

If none of that works, it’s possible that Apple changed the USB Stack Security Protocols when they released MacOS 11.4. Apple generally only does this in full MacOS updates but they also did this in incremental update 10.15.4 causing havoc and mayhem like this…

          6. “Have you tried removing the battery and restarting the computer as it suggests? If so, you need to run Camera Driver after each reboot when running firmware updates”

            I tried, unfortunately no success.

“I suggest removing SD cards so that particular app doesn’t launch.”

Unfortunately I also remove the cards during the attempts.

I guess my only alternative is a virtual machine with Windows or a friend with a pc.

I thank you for your efforts and perseverance.

    1. You must first configure your FTP Server. Once you do that, have the following connection info ready:

      • IP address or domain name of the FTP server
      • User name and password

In your camera, press the Menu button and go to Network > Network1 > [FTP Transfer Func.] > FTP Server 1

Choose Display Name and give the profile a short descriptive name. Go one step back, and switch to the Destination Settings section. Configure the following settings:

Host Name – The host name or IP address of the FTP server.
Secure Protocol – Enable secure FTP transfers. Leave it disabled.
Port – The port number of the FTP server. If the FTP server runs on the default port 21, skip this field.
Directory – Set the destination folder on the FTP server. If you leave this field empty, RAW and JPEG files will be uploaded to a separate folder in the user home directory. The current date is used as the name of the upload folder.

Press OK to save the connection settings, switch to the User Settings Info screen, and enter the user name and the password in the appropriate fields. Press OK, and quit the menu mode.

To upload photos from the camera to the configured FTP server, switch to the viewing mode, press the Menu button and go to Network > Network1 > FTP Transfer

Once the camera has established a connection to the FTP server, select the photos you want to upload, press the Menu button, and choose OK.
