DP Review Confirms Video PDAF with Sigma MC-11 Lens Adapter

As I posted on Monday, DP Review’s Deputy Technical Editor Rishi Sanyal reported that Sigma Mount Converter MC-11 for Sony E-mount ($249 Pre-Order for Canon EF | Sigma SA Mount) is the first lens adapter to support functions like Eye AF and Lock-On AF modes using third party lenses on Sony mirrorless cameras. Rishi’s video posted on DP Review confirms Video PDAF is possible with Sigma Art 35mm F1.4 DSLR lens on a mirrorless Sony camera with Hybrid AF.

Though this still needs to be tested, this in theory could mean Video PDAF is possible on Sony mirrorless cameras that support Hybrid AF which, again in theory, includes Sony a7, a7II, a7RII, a6000 & a6300 using MC-11 and supported Sigma EF and SA lenses listed below.

Sigma’s list of Sigma EF and SA lenses supported on MC-11:

FULLFRAME:
Sigma 24-35mm F2 DG HSM Art Lens

Not sure how I didn’t see that! I spoke to someone at Sigma today who said it will work with all AF features and types. He’s not sure why that chart is still up and these are pre-production models, etc. Anyway, guess we’ll just have to wait a few more weeks.

    1. Correct the Sigma 85mm F1.4 is an old lens design. Only the 15 Sigma Art, Contemporary & Sport lenses on the list (in Canon EF & Sigma SA mounts) – plus it’s likely to support all future Sigma Art, Contemporary & Sport EF & SA lenses

The MC-11 still has a lot of unsolved problems. I bought one this summer together with one of the new Global Vison-lenses (Sigmas 17-70mm with Canon bajonett)and could pretty fast see the following problems together with my Sony A6300 and A7 II:

AF-S was totally unusable when I got it and still is after two FW-upgrades. It doesn´t lock in focus in door at all. It takes bright sunlight for that. If there is the slightest low light I have to use AF-C (continous) which is the only setting that works and locks in fokus but when it does so it never rests which always gives kind of a “buzzing” sound.

It´s also impossible to use this combo to film videos with phase detect AF on since that produce this constant noise that totally spoils the film files.

I have reported this to Sigma through my reseller in Stockholm (Sweden) and hopefully they will fix the problems now. I have even sent videofilms so they can hear for themselves.

I have seen a few “reviews” on the net of the MC-11 and most reviewers doesn´t seem to have tested these products in real life. Because if they had I don´t think they ever could have missed these problems.

The strange thing is that this MC-11 seem to work far better with Canon´s lenses (that they call incompatible) than Sigmas own (that really are the ones that are incompatible right now).

I don´t understand why Sigma has released this product and I don´t understand how they can release at least two FW-upgrades without fixing anything else apparently than problems they might have had with Canon´s glass. Finally I just can´t understand all these photo journalists (even from dPreview) that aren´t doing their job warning us from products like this.

    The other

    1. The Sigma 17-70mm is NOT among the support Art, Contemporary or Sports lenses.

It’s also not compatible with Sigma USB Dock so there’s no way to update the firmware.

I’m fairly certain that every post I’ve written about MC-11 (including this one) lists the compatible lenses.

The idea with this MC-11 adapter is brilliant and the Sigma Optimization Software is a very nice solution to handle both lens and adapter firmware updates and adjust the lenses If needed. But we still wait for Sigma to deliver focus accuracy and a silent focusing solution good enough for filming.

I can tell you that I even have an external Röde microphone but still it doesn´t help
