      1. It’s kind of disgusting. My only complaint. I am certain they could make auto focus better. I get that the family is crowded and they want to push people to newer more expensive models.

        1. Firmware 3.20 maxes out what is possible with a6000 Hardware. Sony a6000 is over five years old. There have been many hardware improvements since its release. It’s still a LOT of camera for the money.

  1. To bad they can’t address battery drain. you would think a simple fix to make people happy. If i pull my battery for a second or two I have no drain and i like to keep setup in auto for view finder. Unless i’m missing something.

  2. I have read that firmware updates have made some 3rd party batteries incompatible. Is there a way to determine which batteries are compatible.

  3. Hi Brian;

Do you happen to know if the components on the A6000 have been changed through it’s 5 year (and counting) life? I’m looking at getting an older used one–if it passes muster is there any reason not to?

  4. Hello,
Is there anywhere I can download the v3.20 for my a6000? I updated to v3.21 few days ago and the HSS function on my flashes no longer works. I contacted the flash manufacturer and they in fact confirmed that the v3.21 will change the hot shoe config. Flash I’m using is Interfit badger unleashed, and I love it, but I lose an important function. Let me know if anyone can help

      1. This is quite disappointing. Since I upgraded to the new 3.21 update, my focus magnifier keeps bugging in and out of zoom. It makes it really frustrating since before I get to focus on my subject, it would already be gone or have relocated.

          1. In that case the thing that makes it “jump” out of magnified mode is lightly touching the shutter release. It’s designed to work that way.

  5. Thank you for the quick response time and thank you for that clarification, but I’m still getting confused–I’m convinced it might be a bug. It zooms back out while I’m still trying to focus, and the zoom indicator on the top left still says x5.9. It mixes up the magnifications since when I press the OK button, it says it zooms to x11.7, but shows x5.9 zoom. Then when I press OK again, it’s supposed to go out of zoom, but that’s when it shows x11.7. Going back to x5.9, that’s when it takes me out of zoom.

    tl;dr
when it says x5.9 it zooms to x11.7
when it says x11.7 it goes out of zoom
and when I select to go out of zoom, it zooms to x11.7

    1. I’m not aware of an “OK” Button.

You press the magnification button to zoom in.

      1. I’m sorry, I’m just not quite sure what the actual button is called. It’s the button on the center of the dial. Once I start to turn the focus ring and the focus magnifier activates, pressing that center button is supposed to make it go from x5.9 magnification to x11.7 magnification.

        1. That may be the problem. If the Center Button is assigned another function, it will do that instead.

  6. Hello Brian, I have an a6000 ilce 6000 (60i) made in Thailand version. i t doesnt have a PAL/NTSC SELECTOR unlike the (50i version). would the firmware upgrade include this option to switch between PAL and NTSC?

    thanks

    1. Nope. It has nothing to do with the country the camera is assembled. North American models of that camera are set to NTSC

  7. My one is running with firmware v2. Should I update it to current version and what that will improve. ?

  8. I update the camara and Now it does not turn on!!! totally disagree! now I have to speed a lot of money in a service center to fix it!

    1. That only happens if the computer goes to sleep or the camera is disconnected or shuts down during the update.

First off, confirm you still have power in your camera battery after the update. If so:

      Remove the camera battery.
Turn the camera to the On position.
Hold the Shutter Button down for 30 seconds.
      Reinsert the camera battery.

  9. Can anyone please tell me if there is any way to do a firmware upgrade from v1 to v3.21 using a Mac with OSX 12.2.1? I realise this camera is getting old but it is very popular and still being sold. Surely Sony should feel an obligation to support their products? Apparently not according to their Customer Service help line who confirmed that Mac OSX 10.14 was the last OS supported by Sony yet I notice the RX100iii which is a similar vintage has no such problems with firmware upgrades. Many thanks.

    1. Sure, not a problem. Just find a friend with a PC, or a Mac running OS 10.12-10.14 or use PC simulation software such as Virtual Desktop.

Sony a6000 Firmware Update 3.21 was released on March 19, 2019. Then on June 24, 2020, I issued MacOS Big Sur Warning for Sony Camera Owners recommending “Sony camera owners should NOT update to Big Sur until all Sony camera & lens firmware is updated. Please make certain the firmware on every Sony camera & lens you own is updated BEFORE even considering macOS Big Sur update.”

It’s an Apple thing. Every year they feel compelled to issue a shiny new MacOS that wreaks havoc. Never, ever, ever update your MacOS without heeding the advice above. The same thing will happen with MacOS 13 and 14 and 15 and…
