Sony Firmware Update 1.10 for Sony A7 A7R A7S

[UPDATE: Sony Firmware Update 1.20 is now available. It includes everything in this update. Click here to go directly the FW 1.20 Update]

Sony has released utility firmware version 1.10 updates for Sony a7, a7R and a7S cameras that improves the power-on time after downloading the Smart Remote Control.

Improvements over version 1.02

Officially this “improves the power-on time after downloading the Smart Remote Control PlayMemories Camera App.” But I’ve noticed that it also greatly reduces the lag time making the shutter release MUCH more responsive when triggered by the app.

Benefits provided by previous updates included in version 1.10

Provides support for the SEL70200G lens:
  • Supports the “Fast Hybrid AF” function and future Fast Hybrid AF compatible E mount lenses
  • Adds the “Focus hold button” function
    Reduces start-up time:
  • The start-up time has been reduced in cases when the camera is switched on immediately after being switched off
Provides support for additional PlayMemories Camera Apps and additional features for previously supported apps:
  • Supports the “Liveview Grading” and “Smooth Reflection” applications
  • Supports the smooth automatic exposure feature in the “Time-lapse” application ver. 2.00 and later
    Improved image quality
  • Previous Update 1.02 improved Jpeg noise reduction.

    2. Hello Brian, I updated my A7 to 1.10 about three weeks ago and everything works well until today. In a middle of a concert shoot all my photos were getting overexposed and I could not control it, then suddenly my aperture and shutter wheel stopped working, I cannot adjust my aperture in APERTURE priority mode nor any other manual mode. Luckily I got enough and decent shots. At home and more calm I changed lenses, adapter etc etc etc and nothing. So I reset my setting and initialize the camera and it seems everything resume to normal. I change some of my common setting again but tomorrow I will so more tests. Do you happen to know of any similar issue or other reported issue in this regard?. Cheers and your comments and greatly appreciated.
      Alfredo Perez

    3. The firmware updater stalls and becomes unresponsive at the reset the camera stage, when trying to verify the connection. I’m on a windows 7 64bit. Any ideas?

    5. Hey Brian, I send my a7R in for cleaning and they updated the firmware to 1.10. Before this I was able to use my Rokinon lens with manual focus assist. It would automatically change to manual focus assist when I started moving the focus ring. Now I can’t get it to work at all. I can manually zoom in by pushing C1 and check the focus, but I don’t get the color shift as I focus and have to push the button. How can I get back my previous abilities?

      1. I was running FW 1.02 on my A7R when I tested Rokinon lenses and manual focus assist would not engage with that version. Do you know if you had FW 1.0 or 1.01 before you sent your camera in?

    6. When I click on Firmware Update icon, I receive an error message:
“Firmware Updater can’t be opened because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed.”

How can I pass this error message? I use Mac 10.10

    7. Oh, no! Things looked like they were going along swimmingly. Then the updater said that there had been a problem, that I needed to turn off the camera, take out the battery, disconnect it from the computer. Reboot the updater and then attempt again. Now my camera acts like it has no software and won’t turn on again! Help!

      1. Sorry to hear that Marcia. I’ve never had an update fail, so I’ve passed this on to Sony technical support. It’s very important to follow all of the steps and warnings that I’ve listed.

        1. Thank you SO much for your help, Brian! Soon after I posted the above message, I got an email from you and then almost immediately from elite customer support at Sony! In the meantime, I had braved the toll-free number waiting times and was able to get excellent technical support from Sony. All is well, my camera had gotten stuck in “reset.” I am very impressed with Sony’s service and Brian’s help! I am a reader for life!

          1. Ironically, I was trying to update to Version 1.10. The next day, Sony introduced Version 1.20! At least I remembered how to do it! Thanks, again!

            1. Marcia, you’ve said that the problem is in “reset”, but what exactly did you do?

            2. Sergey, just follow the onscreen directions. Remove the battery. Turn the camera off. Disconnect USB cord. After battery is out at least 10 seconds put it back in. Turn the camera on and start over.

    8. Hi Brian,

I’m running Windows 7 (64 bit) and I can’t seem to execute the 1.10 update successfully – currently my camera is still on 0.9 version (which might be the problem). I’ve tried about 10 times now. I keep getting a message at the point of resetting the camera that says “the update data is corrupted and to download it again…I keep trying but no dice. Any thoughts that might be helpful? Thanks so much!

      1. Unless I’m mistaken, these cameras shipped with v1.0 (or higher). Firmware v0.9 would indicate that’s a pre-production camera so I believe that must be updated by Sony.

        1. Thanks for your input Brian – I fear you are right. 🙁 I’ve been trying to speak with the team at Sony, but their support over the phone doesn’t really understand the problem. You wouldn’t happen to have any insight on how to get capable support on the matter, would you?

    9. During firmware update, my computer slept and I got an error message to take out the battery and restart the progress. I took the battery out for a minute and put it back on, but the camera would not turn on. Is it a brick now? What can I do next?

      1. Ouch! Quoting my instructions in BOLD above:

“IMPORTANT: Do not allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change your settings, please refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.”

You never want anything to interrupt the update process once it starts which is also why I say to use a 100% full battery.

Did you also disconnect the USB cable when turning off camera and removing battery? If not try all this once again and just as before leave the battery out for a minute with the camera off.

If after that the camera will not turn on, you need to send it to a Sony Service Center.

      2. Ken, I have the same problem. Have u found way to solve this problem. The camera doesn’t respond at all and the “access lamp” is on continuously.

        1. Simply follow the on-screen directions when this happens, Marinos. Turn off you camera. Disconnect the USB cable. Remove the battery for at least 30 seconds. Quit the update and start over. When you put the battery back in the lamp should be off.

    10. I am having a HUGE issue.. I was in the middle of updating my sony a6000 firmware to 2.00 and during the “Run the update” the USB was accidenrally moved and my cameras LCD was shut off so i unplugged my camera and i don’t know what happened but now my camera won’t turn on at all. I even charged the battery and inserted it and it still won’t turn on. The only thing that switches on is a red dot on the bottom of it. Please tell me what i need to do i’m afraid i messed up my camera.

      1. Hi Adriana,

Take the battery out for at least one minute. That should clear the red light.

If it doesn’t – you need to send the camera to a service facility.

This is why I say, DON’T TOUCH THE CAMERA WHILE AN UPDATE IS IN PROGRESS!

Once it starts – just walk away for 15 minutes…
