Sony announced a new entry-level Sony a68 A-mount camera featuring low light ‘4D focus’ and reminding us that A-mount is not dead!

Sony A68 features a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor. Like Sony’s APS-C a77II and full-frame a99 cameras, it uses a hybrid electronic OLED viewfinder with 100 percent coverage and a 2.7-inch TFT LCD that tilts 135 degrees up and 55 degrees downwards. It’s translucent mirror allows what Sony calls “4D Focus” with a 79-point phase-detection AF that works continuously at up to 8fps, even in low-light.

Other features include an Exmor CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 100-25600 and 1080p video with 50Mbps XAVC S recording. As with stills, movie shooting also benefits from continuous autofocus. It’s also got 10 customizable buttons and SteadyShot image stabilization works with all 34 A-mount lenses.

Sony a68 is expected in March, 2016, and will cost around $650 for the body only – well below the list price of Sony a77II ($1,129) and Sony a99 ($1,999).

  1. Looks like a great camera for the price point, but It doesn’t seem much of a “lesser” model compared to the a77ii. Lower rate for FPS, plastic mount, but that seems about it. Am I missing any other differences?

    1. it is a much lesser model. i can appreciate the better af system, which is now taken from the higher model, whereas the A65 had the autofocus from the model below.

but 8fps? not even. 8fps. in jpg only. in tele/cropmode only. not with full resolution.
      My a65 shoots 10fps in Raw+jpg.

Its a downgrade. a calculated budget model. nothing new.
