Sony announces 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 GII SSM lens

With an improved AF tracking algorithm and SuperSonic Motor providing performance 4x faster than its predecessor, the Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G SSM II Lens $1,148 (B&H) is a versatile telephoto zoom lens well-suited to outdoor sports and wildlife photography. The lens works with A-mount full frame and APS-C cameras and has a maximum aperture of f/4.5-5.6 as well as a minimum aperture of f/22-29. It implements an extra-low dispersion glass element that helps reduce chromatic aberrations and improves contrast. Additionally, it has a Nano AR coating that controls flare and ghosting.

The lens barrel is moisture and dust-resistant for protection from the elements and it can focus as close as 4′ for portraiture or floral photography. The aperture diaphragm consists of 9 rounded blades that will produce pleasing out-of-focus areas. Included with the lens are a dedicated hood and carrying case. It accepts 62mm threaded filters.

  1. Brain, thanks for keeping a cutting edge and excellent blog. How do you think this stack up against the Sony 70-200 f4 G-OSS? Sharpness and Bokeh? Curious about your opinion.

    1. Sharpness on the previous SAL70-300 4.5-5.6 G was quite good. The comparison I’d make between this lens and the FE 70-200 F4 is more about usability than sharpness of bokeh. A week ago, I’d have said OSS was a plus with the FE 70-200 F4 OSS, but the A7II kind of renders that a bit moot. I’m a big fan of native glass in focal lengths where it exists – but one thing that might tip things to the SAL 70-300 F4.5-5.6 GII would be in the words of Nigel Tufnel, the numbers go to 300… So, if 200mm is enough reach – go with the FE 70-200 F4 – but now you have another great option if need a lens with more reach.
