Cool Gear: TetherTools Aero Table + LoPro-2 Bracket

TetherTools Aero Table

The truth is that I’ll do anything I can to avoid tethering, but I do it to make reviewing images easier when clients are on set. I’ll also tether if I want to apply preset “look” to the shoot. I love that Tether Tools makes this as easy as possible and the spontaneity of working quickly and focusing on interacting with the person in front of my lens.

When I tether my cameras to my MacBook Pro, I use Tether Tools products because I want the process to be as simple and painless as possible. I dig simple and painless. I break down the process with Tether Tools on their Tether Talk Blog.

To tether Sony a99 or a900 cameras, we fire up Sony’s Remote Camera Control tethering software which downloads images to a folder on my desktop. You can download Remote Camera Control for Windows at: www.sony.co.jp/imsoft/Win/ or for Mac at: www.sony.co.jp/imsoft/Mac/

We run Adobe Lightroom set to watch the import folder. The one trick here is that the folder needs to be empty when you set Lightroom to watch it.

This allows us to apply a preset to the RAW images that roughly simulate the way I want the shoot to look on import. Whether it’s high-contrast black and white or highly saturated color, the client sees something close to the final image.

Like most of you, when we have clients on set, we’ll go full-court press with digital-tech-rockin-a-MacPro-and-30-inch-monitor-on-a-magliner. But whenever we move on the set, I feel like it’s herding elephants at the circus. I love it when I can avoid that. Tether Tools has developed products that take the circus out of your production.

Tethering Cables:

Since I’ve got big feet and all the grace of a mule, I love the High-Visibility Orange TetherPro USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Active Extension Cables. They keep me from tripping and tearing down the set.

Cable Management:

I really like the JerkStoppers (the nice folks at Tether Tools swear they didn’t name them after me) because they keep the connection solid”¦

Tether Tables:

Tether Tables that fit standard light stands or tripods that you probably already have on set.

Tether Tools is always coming up with new products and one of the newest makes tether travel a breeze. I really dig is Tether Tools new LoPro-2 Pro-Bracket for my Tether Table Aero. It’s small and light for travel yet still has a 1/4×20 tripod tread and is grooved to fit right into the Arca-style Quick Release Heads I have on all my tripods. It’s thin profile allows you to easily slip your Tether Table into your laptop bag or at the top of a roller bag when your head out for your next photo shoot.
