Commlite has released their next-generation High-Speed Commlite CM-EF-E HS Lens Adapter (Available for $159 on Amazon) designed to mount Canon EF & EF-S lenses on Sony E-mount cameras.

In addition to supporting Contrast Detection Autofocus, CM-EF-E HS now supports Phase Detection AF for faster AF. Users can switch between PDAD and Contrast AF by pressing the Focus Mode Button on the side of the adapter.

Unlike previous Commlite canon lens adapters which had fixed firmware, CM-EF-E HS firmware update system is user-upgradeable via a USB port on the side of the adapter.

The firmware is updated with the standard USB-MicroUSB cable.

The adapter interior has a special spiral anti-reflective coating which prevents reflections onto the sensor and gold-plated contact pins on electronic contacts for greater conductivity.

While there are other sub-$200 Canon EF Smart lens adapters on the market, they lack firmware updateability and come up short in terms of Phase Detection AF. If Commlite actually takes the time to improve and update their firmware, Commlite CM-EF-E HS Lens Adapter might finally offer a true low-priced alternative to Metabones T Smart Adapter V

Key Features:

    • Faster AF
    • Switch between Phase and Contrast AF
    • EXIF information transfer
    • Electronic control of the diaphragm
    • Support for the built-in lens stabilization system
    • Contacts with gold coating
    • Removable tripod mount
    • Firmware update via USB
    • Aluminum construction

  1. I ordered one of these for my A7iii and it turns out not to be compatible. Waiting on a reply from Commlite if it might be upgraded in firmware later.

      1. Not working at all for me on the A7III. It works on my A7S without any problem. I didn’t see anything on Commlite’s web site to say there was an incompatibility and so far they haven’t responded to my query.

        1. I asked the online vendor I purchased through – they said they contacted Commlite about it and were advised it doesn’t work with the A7III.

      1. I spoke to the seller and they confirmed it for me so Its a bit bizarre, I had no control over the aperture at all, it was on the camera correctly, just didn’t work.

  2. I finally got word back from Commlite that my lens isn’t compatible (Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6 II DG HSM). Weirdly it does work when the adapter and lens are on my A7S. I’ve tried a number of different browsers but none show anything in the Compatibility tab on their product page.

The list of Sigma lenses they’ve advised me are compatible are:
    SIGMA 10-20mm f/4-5.6 HSM
    SIGMA 24-35mm f/2 DG
    SIGMA 24-70mm f/2.8 DG
SIGMA 50-150mm f/2.8 APO DC HSM
    SIGMA 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG
    SIGMA 120-300mm f/2.8 DG
    SIGMA 24mm f/1.4 DG
    SIGMA 50mm f/1.4 DG
    SIGMA 35mm f/1.4 DG
    SIGMA 85mm f/1.4 DG

I wonder if my vendor was telling the truth when they said Commlite had advised them it won’t work with the A7III. I got that message back in less than 24 hours. My experience has been about a weeks wait between messages from Commlite and it’s not true as Brian’s copy is working. If you don’t have an opportunity to test your particular lens before buying you might want to email Commlite first.

  3. I purchased this and it works great so far on my a7iii with the 50mm II, and 85 1.8. Not working well with tamron 70-200 2.8 version 1. Expected because it’s not on the list of supported lenses. I’m wondering what the firmware update corrects/adds to the device. Contacted customer support but so far no reply.

  4. It just delivered, but i got th one wit the usb port inside the adapter.
But there is no mac firmware update of the EF-HS V21 Firmware.
