    1. Not needed. Firmware updates are preformed through the camera with the adapter and a lens attached.

Nikon 105mm 1.4 lens requires the new Pro version of the adapter (v05 or later). Firmware v05 can be updated to v06 to add Nikon 105mm 1.4 support.

  1. Thanks for this news Brian.
What are the main drawbacks of these adapters? I recently bought an A9, but I have 6 FX Nikon lenses, and I’d like to fully use them on the A9. Thanks

    1. The main drawback is actually Nikon’s highly varied AF design. Unlike Canon which have fairly consistent adapted AF performance across the entire lens line, some Nikon AF lenses adapt quite well others not at all. In general, the newest Nikon AF lenses perform best. There’s a compatibility list linked in the post.

Be aware that AF is limited to 10 FPS with any adapted glass even with the v06 firmware update for Sony a9.

  2. Hi Brian, I am considering buying a Sony a7 body to use with my existing Nikon G lenses. Somewhere in the threads I have read that the Commlite Pro does Not work with this camera. Is this correct ?

Also silly question, , but i just want to understand that – If I were to just buy a manual adapter with an aperture control ring, then essentially i can use the A7, but only in Manual mode to focus , everything else will work as normal. Is this correct ?

    Thanks

  3. Brian, I just purchased the adapter and my first experience was to use it with the AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR. It did AF reasonably well, but there was no sign that the SteadyShot or VR was working. In the viewfinder showing the SteadyShot function, there was the triangle with ! so I guess it’s telling me that something is unhappy. Is there a menu option I’m missing? Or, could there be a lens firmware issue? Other items appear to work correctly; for example, I could see the lens EXIF data in Lightroom and Lightroom selected the correct lens profile. The camera is the A7r2. Thank you for your help.

    1. It’s possible you are getting both VR form the lens + IBIS from the camera (this is fine with native E-mount lenses but a big non-no with adapted glass.) Try turning off VR on the lens then check to see if SteadyShot is still active in the camera.

If so, you should be good to go. If not, the adapter is giving you double-or-nothing and the firmware needs that fixed (Metabones fixed this issue with their Smart Adapters shortly after a7II was released.

  4. Where do I buy this? Is this the best option for me?
    A7Riii
    28 1.4e
    105 1.4e
    70*200 2.8e
    sigma 12*24 f4 art

    thank you for this site!

  5. You mentioned previously that you thought that the Vello branded smart adaptor was just a rebranded version of the Commlite, but on this newer slimmer version 6 the Commlite supports the PC-E lenses, but not the 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR, while the most updated version 5 of the Vello advertised on B&H does support the 105mm Micro, but does not list the PC-E lenses. Are you aware of these differences or do you expect them to be the same? The Commlite says that the only way to support the 105rmm Micro is to use firmware ver.03 which I would not expect is otherwise beneficial especially if the user is mounting it on a newer camera. Lastly, both adaptors show compatibility with the A9, but do not yet list that it is compatible with the A7r iii, which I plan to order as soon as I can confirm compatibility. Thanks for your efforts on this topic and Merry Christmas!

    1. Yes, Vello is a re-branded Commlite CM-ENF-E1 Pro adapter.

Vello currently ships with fw v05, while it’s possible to get Commlite with the latest v06. I expect it will eventually be possible for users to update Vello and Fotodiox v05 to v06 (but v04 and earlier cannot update beyond v04)

Each company writes their own release notes. Commlite is a bit bolder in their claims of compatibility.

As I cannot say when fw v06 will be available for the other brands, if ordering today it makes sense to buy Commlite CM-ENF-E1 Pro adapter v06

      1. Thanks so much Brian! So would you recommend the Commlite over the rebranded models since they seem to offer the quickest firmware updates. Lastly, how does the Viltrox NF-E1 compare?
P.S. – Your Ebay affiliate link did not point towards the v6 of the Commlite, so I would be happy to buy whichever of the two you recommend through your updated link 🙂

        1. Yup. Only Commlite is available with firmware v06.

Vello ships with v05 and has not yet posted a fw update link and FotodioX has not yet released their updated version which I’m told will also ship with v05, so I’d go with Commlite in order to get the latest firmware. I re-did my link, the first result should be the one eBay seller that offers version 06. Thanks.

  6. I’m in the process to finally going for an a7R III in order to use PC-E and TS-E lenses… but, i still can’t find the PC-E in the compatibility chart…?
Ans what about the sigma ART 20 for nikon ? (while 24, 35 and 50 are ok… non 20 ?).

    1. The Sigma Art 20 is a weird lens, The EF version mis-focuses even with Sigma MC-11, so it’s possible that’s the case with the Nikon version as well – or possibly Commlite hasn’t gotten to it yet.

  7. ok !

i’ve read that people find out that the 24 TS-E II works much better on a native Canon Dslr… PC-E lenses are not supported… i think i should avoid Sony then !

Best regards from south of france !

    1. Actually Canon TS-E lenses perform better on Sony a7R II or a7R III than on any Canon camera quite simply because no Canon camera can match that Sony sensor.

The problem with adapting Nikon PC-E lenses is that while Commlite, Vello & Fotodiox Nikon Smart Adapters allow you to control the aperture of PC-E lenses – you can only release the shutter when the the lens is wide open. It’s an issue with adapting those lenses – not the camera.

  8. I have the Sony a6500 and Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 AF-S G ED, 24-70mm VR
f/2.8 FX AF-S E N ED and the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lenses from my Nikon kit. I was considering buying some pro Sony lens but if these adapters work reasonably well with these lenses that would be be a bonus. There seems to be a couple of adapters being discussed. Which would work best and reasonably well with my setup? Thank you.

  9. So the adapter will work the same in AF-C (same lens support etc) but will be more effective with the Riii in AF-S than it is with the Rii in AF-S?

    1. It’s theoretically possible that in some situations AF-S final contrast AF critical focus can lock in more quickly on a7R III than a7R II, but PDAF is still the biggest part of the equation.

  10. Hey Brian, I just bought the 19mm tilt shift and vello adaptor for my Sony A7r2. It will not change the aperture and is stuck at 4.0.

Is there another adaptor that you recommend or is it a firmware upgrade that is needed? I assume manual adaptors sucjh as Novoflex will not work either

  11. Hello, Brian

I am having infinity focus issue with my Commlinte CM ENF E1 Pro Adapter. I have a Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 and I can’t focus to infinity. The lens can go past the infinity symbol. However, with this lens adapter, I’m already at the end of the focus ring and I still can’t get the farthest subject in focus. I also have a Dumb Adapter and can confirm that the dumb adapter can focus to infinity(or the farthest subject). Can you check if the Commlite has a design Flaw? I read a review in amazon(link below) that it there is.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R3G1S7WT1MOTLE/ref=cm_cr_getr_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B01AXZNLIY

      1. Yes, I suspect it’s a Flange distance issue. The adapter is longer by 1mm. Have you tried the adapter with an UWA lens like Tamron 15-30mm or Nikkor 14-24mm at widest focal length and f2.8?

  12. Hey Brian I’m so glad to found your website, have you by any chance used the 16-35 f2.8 Nikkor lens with the Commlite adapter on the Sony ar7iii, if not do you know If it will work with the ar7iii

  13. Brian sorry its a nikkor 16-35 f4 lens not f2.8 i think based on your smart adapters article i read i think it will work with the commlite adapter, have you tried this lens? will autofocus work on the ar7III

  14. Has anyone tried the commlite pro adapter on an older A7R body ?
I’d like to use it on my older Sony A7R too ( obviously with contrast dectection and without in body image-stabilisation ).

  15. This may sound like a daft question, but do you know if this works with the a6000?
I see the next two models listed, so i think it would, but it would be nice to know it does before spending the money.

  16. I tried it on A7ii with 24-120 f/4, 70-200 2.8 VRii and sigma 24 1.4 art. For some reasons, none worked. I still got the exif info, but it just won’t focus.

I am wondering if I need to change any setting in a7ii to make it work. Any idea?

Also, did you try it on a7iii? Does it work?

    Btw, love your gallery

    1. Adapting Nikon lenses is buggy as hell. I’ve had to re-mount lenses during testing to get AF to work (or sorta work…)

Native glass is not only sharper it’s headache-free.

    1. All three adapters will all perform exactly the same. Given the spotty performance when adapting Nikon glass, I don’t recommend adapting Nikon DX APS-C lenses.

  17. Hi Brian. Thanks for the read. I’m stuck in Singapore and my D90 just broke.

I have an a6000 also and I’m a bit lost as to what adapter I can buy(if any) that will suit my Nikon lenses.
    I have the tokina 11-16
    Nikon 28-300
    And Nikon 35mm prime
Will these go on my a6000 or am I going to have to get another lens or body to get me out of trouble on my holiday? I only brought the 10-18mm Sony for the a6000.

    Spewing!

    1. Since you have the Sony 10-18mm there is no reason to adapt the Tokina 11-16. Sell it instead.

Nikon lenses don’t adapt well, but this adapter is you best bet for the others.

  18. I am using a Sony A7R3 with the Commlite adaptor V06 and my Nikon lenses. The aperture stays at the widest possible aperture of then lens until the picture is taken, in which moment it changes to the selected aperture. It is not a problem if i plan to shoot wide open but if i want to stop down let’s say to f/22 with my 24-70 2.8E VR, the aperture stays at f/2.8 until the picture is taken. The picture is at f/22 but since it stays at f/2.8 it is impossible to check the DOF for a landscape photo before taking the picture. Is there a way to change that behavior? With native E mount lenses the camera stops down in real time to the selected aperture. With Nikon lenses it stays wide open until i press the shutter to take the picture. The even more weird thing is that the Nikon lenses change aperture in real time when in movie mode…
By the way, i am using the 24mm PC-E and except from the issue i described above, it works like it works on my D810. I don’t know why people having problems with it as they post here.

    1. That’s a good thing. Not a bad one. Focus would be horrible with an adapted DSLR lens at F22.

Here’s what to do instead: Go into Custom Key Settings and assign ‘Aperture Preview’ to a Custom Button.

  19. Thank you very much for replying and so fast, i appreciate it. It is bad for landscape photography where i want to see in real time the DOF and i anyway use manual focus. I have done what you also suggest but the problem is that i cannot use Aperture preview while i am zoomed in to check focus. So the background is out of focus when zoomed in or if i use the Aperture preview i cannot zoom in to check focus.

  20. Neither Aperture Preview or Shot. Result Preview work after i have zoomed in. I found out that what happens after i am zoomed in depends on the button i have assigned any of those two functions to. The C4 button resets the point where i zoom to the center, the C3 takes me out of the zoomed in screen and shows me a full screen of Aperture Preview or Shot. Result Preview depending on what i have assigned to C3. C1 and C2 behave as C3. The Multi-Slc Center Btn, assigned with any of the two functions, takes you out of zoom instantly, without even pressing the button! Center button does not work either, left right down buttons do not have the option to assign the two functions. AEL and AF-ON Button behave like C1, C2, C3 taking me out of the zoom screen in order to preview the aperture.
The only work-arounds i can think of is to either take the picture look, adjust and repeat or go in movie mode where, funny, the aperture changes in real time and can zoom in, with less magnification than in photo mode but better than nothing. I tried also to keep pressed any button i have assigned to either of the two functions and then zoom but it does not work, it gives the message that it is not possible during this function.

  21. Hi Brian i wonder that when will the 7th firmware come. And the real problem is i wanna use nikon 300 2.8 vr II with my A7 III. Is it possible?

  22. It is a great site! Thank you!
I got a A7R body converted for Infrared and I want to use my Nikon lens. Would you please recommend a best adapter for the configuration? Thank you!

      1. Thanks for quick response. So do you think I would be better off using adapter like Metabones smart adapter II? Can a7r control the aperture through The Metabones adapter?

      2. If I don’t mind manual focus, does this Commlite adapter can least control aperture and transmit EXIF with A7R? Thanks again

  23. Thank you so much for all your work!!!

1/ Can I use this adapter on Sony A9 with Nikon 400mm F/2.8 FL and 600mm F/4 FL?
2/ Also, can I add a teleconverter to this combo?

  24. Brian,

    Great site. Follow regularly.

I have the v6 and it works very well for my A7iii and 70-24 2.8, 70-200 2.8 VR as well as Sigma 24 1.4. Not perfect, but using single point focus or eye focus on AF-S. Very sharp and more than good enough

One thing I worry is the camera firmware upgrade. I also have an A7ii. The adapter did not work on A7ii until I upgraded my A7ii to the latest firmware.

On the other hand, my A7iii works very well now but I am still on version 1.01. Afraid to upgrade to the latest version because once I upgrade, I can’t go back.

I am sure your A7iii is on the latest firmware. I am wondering if you used the adapter recently on your A7iii. Is it still working?

    Thanks

  25. Hi, would you happen to have a working link for the ENF-E 1 Pro firmware update? The mac download on commlite site is not working.

  26. Hi Brian, I am going to use this adapter with Nikon 105 1.4 for A7RIII. Since there is already 2 years ago. Is there any update?

Secondly, AF is only contrast detection but not the phase detection ? It can work for the entire AF coverage ? accurate ?

Does Vignetting and chromatic aberration visible ?

    Thank you.

    1. You definitely want to use v06 with that lens.

Focus is ok at best – just like other Nikon lenses

Vignetting and chromatic aberration is exactly the same as it is on a native body.

      1. Thank you for your quick respond.
I forgot to ask. Does AFC support?
Further on the AF , as I used MC11 for EF lens before some lenses they cannot focus on near the margin of the AF area. Does this lens suffer the similar conditions?

        1. Yea, sort of. Nikon lenses don’t adapt nearly as well as Canon and that particular lens is anything but nimble. It’s like pulling a semi-trailer with a riding lawn mower.

  27. Hi, I have a Sony A9 and a Sony A9II. I’m searching an adapter to use with these cameras a lens Nikon 24 mm PC-E. Do you know one adapter for that

  28. Juan Carlos Viera

    Hi thanks for the information.
Excuse me the question I want to buy the Commlite in order to combine Sony A7III with a Sigma 150-600 ( mount Nikon ) , please have you an opinion about the combination? I can not see any information about it Thanks in advance, Best regards

    1. Nikon adapters are a challenge with an lens, but the AF with that particular lens is especially awful.

      1. Juan Carlos Viera

Thanks !!! I am a little sad…. I’ll have to sell it….I have tested Viltrox and it was bad focus. THANKS!!!!

  29. Brian,

I have Nikon 200mm F4.0 macro and Sony A9. Lens has aperture ring. I do not need AF. I am concerned about only METERING. Will the METERING work when I change the Aperture ring on lens?

    Thanks
    Ramesh

  30. Hello, Brian! Can you tell me if this Commlite ENF-E1 PRO V06 for Nikon F Lens adapter works with a Sony A7 Mk III? I plan to use it with a Nikon 300mm/f4E PF lens. Will auto aperture, AF and VR work efficiently? (How much drop in performance compared to say a Nikon D850 body?

    1. Hello Bharat. I’ll be honest. I’ve given up on testing adapted Nikon lenses.

Aside from Nikon PC-I lenses. Aperture control is the easy part. VR is a dilemma. Enabling VR reduces AF speed. But unlike Metabones Canon Smart adapters, Nikon adapters do not allow you to turn off VR and allow in-camera 5-axis IBIS. Your only option is all or nothing. That sucks.

I run out of ways to split hairs when describing AF performance with adapted Nikon lenses: acceptable, average, usable….

Bottom line. Nikon lenses don’t match the performance of native FE glass or even adapted Canon EF lenses. But since Sony doesn’t yet make a 300 F4, I’d say that IF you already own that lens – give it a shot. But..I’d NEVER buy a Nikon AF lens with the intention of adapting it to Sony E-mount.
