COOL GEAR: Lowepro Pro Messenger Camera Bags

by Brian Smith on November 22, 2011

in Photography Gear

Nothing beats updating a classic, so I love how Lowepro’s new Pro Messenger AW bags were able to create old school classic canvas feel from the latest space age spun polyester slate gray fabric – which is total 007 stuff like a great grey flannel suit that’s also bullet-proof…

I’m rolling the Pro Messenger 200 AW (I.D. 15.4W X 6.3D X 9.4H inches) discreet like a messenger satchel yet big enough to hold all this stuff:

IN THE BAG:
SONY a900
SONY CZ 85/1.4
SONY NEX-5N
SLR MAGIC HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 Lens for Sony E-Mount
SONY a77 with 16-50/2.8
SONY ECMSST1 Compact Stereo Microphone for NEX
LENSBABY Composer Pro w/Sweet 35 Optic for Sony
CF & SD Cards in Cases
Extra batteries and chargers for Sony Alpha and NEX
iPAD loaded with my book ART&SOUL

Other bags in the lineup include the taller narrower Pro Messenger 180 AW (I.D.10.6W X 6.3D X 12H inches)which is perfect if you want to slip a body with a 70-200/2.8 zoom.

There’s also the ever-so-discreet Pro Messenger 160 AW (I.D. 10.6W X 6.3D X 9.4H inches) perfect for the latest compact digital cameras or when you just need a bag big enough for a body and a lens or two.

Getting the VIP Treatment from B&H Photo

by Brian Smith on November 8, 2010

in Photography Gear

Thanks to Isaac Buchinger and Gary Goodman for giving me a VIP Tour of B&H Photo. Though I’ve ordered gear from B&H for the past two decades, Isaac and Gary managed to provide some surprises like their soundproof room for testing microphones and  a glimpse of the massive 70,000 sq foot warehouse under the store which is dwarfed by their One Million Square Foot (Whoa!) Warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Possibly the Biggest surprise was discovering that B&H Photo began with Herman Schreiber’s small storefront on Warren Street…just down the street from my New York apartment. Hmmm…wouldn’t that be convenient…

Finally some big news out of Photokina, where Leica announced the Walter de’Silva-designed Leica M9 Titanium edition camera. De’Silva, head of design for Volkswagen and responsible for designing the Audi A5 and Volkswagen Scirocco, took Leica’s original M9 camera and created the M9 Titanium. De’Silva’s Audi design team proved they were up to the challenge of designing a camera that sold for more than some of their cars.

The M9 Titanium goes on sale in November for an estimated $30,897. Despite the fact that photographers around the world have been clamoring for a $30K camera that’s far too pretty to use, Leica will only sell 500 copies of the special edition camera which includes a Leica’s Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 aspherical lens in matching solid titanium exterior.

Put me on the list for the 50mm/2.8 PC-TS. I love the look of a normal lens with some tilt to throw the plane of focus and you know that Schneider glass will be SWEET!

COOL GEAR: NEX, NEXBABY

by Brian Smith on September 8, 2010

in Photography Gear

One of the truly cool things I love about the Sony NEX cameras is their adaptability to many different lenses. One of the very easy adaptations is using the Sony NEX to Alpha mount adapter to pop an Alpha-mount Lensbaby Composer on the Sony NEX-5 camera for a very compact camera that lets your vision run wild…Sony Nex-5 with a Lensbaby Composer lens for Plastic Camera lookIconic New York image of Lady Liberty photographed with a Sony Nex-5 and Lensbaby Landmark New York City Flatiron Building photographed with a Sony Nex-5 and Lensbaby

COOL GEAR: Acratech GP Ballhead

by Brian Smith on July 30, 2010

in Photography Gear

My favorite new piece of cool photo gear is this super-slick Acratech GP Ballhead. It’s great design maximizes function while minimizing weight. Unlike in other ballheads, the Acratech ballheads have no excess metal so no excess weight and no place for dirt or sand to get trapped. Scott Dordick and the guys at Acratech are always coming up with great designs and this one is not just highly functional engineering, it’s Positively a Work of Art!

The Acratech quick-release works nicely will all Arca-style QR Plates even those with slightly rounded dove tails from Really Right Stuff.

The Acratech GP Ballhead has become my new favorite.
