Rockwell Harwood, Creative Director of Details Magazine and I will be presenting the anatomy of a magazine fashion shoot as we take workshop participants through The DETAILS of Fashion Photography as a part of the NYC Fotoworks on Saturday, October 30th in the freshly renovated downtown Manhattan Sand Box Studio. Rockwell and I will demonstrate the collaboration between creative director and photographer on our magazine fashion shoot model shoot sponsored by Sony. After the shoot, photographers will be able to sit down with Rockwell and learn what makes a great fashion image. Photographers are encouraged to bring their own work so that they can receive critique from the industry’s leading creative director.

Rockwell and I will be followed by Chris Dougherty, Director of Photography of People Magazine, who’ll discuss Editorial Photography in a Post-Print World, a hot topic on the minds of many editorial photographers.

NYC Fotoworks begins the three-day events hosting portfolio reviews with top magazine photo editors and creative directors on Thursday, October 28 and Friday, October 29. This is an incredibly efficient way of getting in to see the editors in two days who you’d have a hard time getting in to see if you two years. It’s a great way for emerging photographers to get their foot in the door and for established photographers to catch up with their existing clients in a very time efficient manner.

I missed the opening of ‘Avedon Fashion 1944-2000′ at the International Center of Photography last Friday because I was at the Redux ‘American Youth’ launch party at the NY Photo Festival in DUMBO. Yesterday, I finally had a chance to check it out and am I glad I did!

The show features six decades of Avedon’s fashion images, it encompasses his magazine work from Harper’s Bazaar to Vogue through the New Yorker as well as the work he did for top fashion designers . Even if you’re familiar with Avedon’s work (and who isn’t?) this show is a must-see and truly inspiring.

The fashionable exhibition is the second installment in the International Center of Photography’s Year of Fashion. It includes 175 prints organized chronologically throughout ICP’s many galleries and includes a rare behind-the-scenes look at the magazine layout process showing many of Avedon’s original prints submitted to Harper’s Bazaar marked up with notes and crop marks.

One of the highlights of the show was seeing three versions of Avedon’s Dovima with Elephants. Be sure not to miss the scratched vintage print horizontal version downstairs..
